THE
GAYLORD HOTEL

February 22nd. 1955.

Dear Joseph E. J:-

I shall of course be very happy to see you and Mary with your bundle of script, which as I understood you on the phone you plan to ship ahead so that I can go over it somewhat before your arrival.

Now my dear boy what a goose you are to get disturbed at something another does even though they are your friends. Divine love is a closer friend than any mortal, save your wife, then don’t be disturbed at anything a person does. If it is not right God will overrule it, for His first care is for you, so trust Him implicitly. My last word to you last night was to ask Mary to tell you what to do and for you to follow exactly what she says. Sometimes emotion gets one too near a scene to know just what is taking place and a girl like Mary stands quietly apart and so can see the right thing for you to do. Then go ahead and do it, and you will find it is truly God guiding you.

I am returning some clippings, etc. you have kindly sent me. Thank you. And for numerous post cards too, all interesting.

I shall reserve plenty of time about the 20th. of March so that if you arrive about then I shall be ready for you but remember only take any trip because God is pointing it out to you as the thing to do and there again be guided by Mary. Divine Love didn’t give you that dear wise understanding girl for nothing. He gave her to you because of the immense help she is and can always be to you so take advantage of what Love has given you and be most humble in your approach to that great gift. Without Love’s gift of Bess to me I could have done nothing for she was always ninety nine percent of whatever little I have been able to accomplish. Mary is the same to you then cherish her as the Pearl of Great Price which when a man findeth he selleth all that he hath and buyeth it with love and tenderness passing human belief.

My love to you both.
Herbert W. Eustace.

Dear J.E.J.-

Under separate cover I am sending you a package of CONSECRATION and a LETTER of March 1st, 1954 dealing with the THREE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS and the nonsense of man being God.

I am going to have a copy of each of these leaflets mailed at once to each one who attended any of the four meetings. I want them all to have them for food for thought, for to me they are most important. The need to be awake is paramount always, but especially to-day coming in its subtle form of man being God, which opens wide the gates of hell in every direction, even as the sun without its rays; what would happen to the earth? It would not any longer be the sun and if man were God, God would no longer be.

Such idiocy but such cunning idiocy. Ninety nine out of one hundred of the run of Scientists would agree with the dragon that my mind is me, and then you are lost because if your mind is you and God is your Mind then you have to be God. No escape from the evil. But fortunately your mind is not you but ever is your Mind and you are you.

My best to you.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnston:-

Your friend or messenger, the President of the California Bank in Lomita, a little town nearest here just about a mile and a half away, Mr. Stanton, surprised us with a little visit yesterday morning bringing us your message of enquiry as to how we fared etc. He found us very comfortably installed in a dear little house with enough of a garden when it gets in perfect order to keep me busy gardening a few hours each day which as you know is what I enjoy. Mildred came down the other day and walked in on us. The us I refer to is the splendid nurse Mrs. Munro who was in charge of me when I found the rascally trick played on me to get me there. More of this anon when I compose the full story of the miniature Next Friends Suit that was played out in all its fullness including one relative at least, with what I thought was a friend but who proved an absolute traitor and whose nefarious scheme if it had succeeded would have been the death knell of THE ONE VOLUME.

The whole comical farce patterned the Next Friends Suit in miniature exactly and when I write it up giving the details it will read like the old Roman Catholic days of the Inquisition. James Cassell to whom I unfortunately introduced you and many others to was the ring leader with Dr. J– as his accomplice and C–W– was a smart aleck tool.

You might wonder what on earth could be their motive in such a dastardly effort to have me declared non compos mentis except to get control of what money I had but of course that was really minor except as with Judas to still the conscience for the moment. The real point was to destroy the Christ as presented in the School Room book the ONE VOLUME. That book evil hates if it knew enough to hate and the purpose of evil was to destroy the author’s mental standing and automatically the book becomes of no moment.

When I really discovered the rascality at work I quickly went to work and we soon uncovered it all and as in the Next Friends Suit the Court immediately threw their humbuggery out of court although they actually had a day and hour set for hearing, and I never heard of it until it was almost consummated. I was to have been arrested, brought into Court and committed. What do you think of that and your so-called relative and friends behind it all? But as the Bible says every weapon that is formed against thee shall come to naught.

All very funny but I shall tell it all in a letter some day that will open blind eyes to see how error repeats itself and with the same results always. Knavery is seen for what it is.

I have a charming little home. I might add directly I saw the deviltry, I notified those concerned including the Hotel that I withdrew every recommendation I had ever made about Cassell. My love to you both. God is in His holy heaven, let all the earth keep silence before Him. I know your work is progressing. Everything stands as before in spite of lies and liars.

Yours,

Herbert W. Eustace.

Letter of June 4, 1955.

Your very dear and understanding letter of June 2nd was a great joy to me and I want to thank you both very much for it. To be Understood is the best of all.

July 18th. 1955.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

Thank you all for your various communications including telephones which you are a perfect goose to waste your money on and to talk such reams when a few words are enough. I am so glad to read in your letter received to-day of July 14th, that “phone calls will be few and far between now”. . . . . . .

Now with regard to the new car. I agree with you that I prefer a broken in car, but Beth, Mrs. Munro wants to break in her own car and this gift I wish to be to her own choosing, so we will stick to not even an executive’s car.

I thought perhaps your Mr. Tuttle might have in mind possibly a brand new car with discounts all off etc. but that is not necessary. It is possible that we can get just as good a trade right here at Torrance which has a good Plymouth dealer and would doubtless give a good trade in on the Studebaker which Mr. Tuttle would or might find it difficult to do.

Yes Mrs. Munro would like every modern convenience for driving and as you say “power steering” is most important. With regard to colour. Yes on that too, Mrs. Munro is as desirous of having red but I don’t think that means top too. I am sure she will be quite willing to do as you suggest, pay a visit to some of the yards and take a look at the many two toned cars to be seen.

In the meantime you might ask by letter your friend Mr. Tuttle what is his best price cash of course, including everything the latest that he can sell a Plymouth Belvedere, two door not four door for. The other day we were doing just as you advise looking at colours and we ran across the Torrance dealer without giving our names or anything but he saw the Studebaker and his proposition was as follows:

3258.90 This was on the slip he gave us.
Full equip.
10 – N.P Ex. including all taxes etc.
__

3258.90
97.77
__27.00
3383.67
683.67 allowances on Studebaker
2700.00 Cash.

You can doubtless understand these figures, but I trust you not to allow anyone to see them, for I do not believe in that sort of business, playing one against the other. He just gave these figures as showing what he could do on a trade etc. It has already gotten around someway or other that we were in the market for a car and we have told no one not even the dealer who gave these figures. We avoided saying anything simply looking around but spies are everywhere as well as Cassell’s.

I suppose Mr. Tuttle being in charge of this district will of course recommend someone in this section which I consider advantageous if any fixing is required.

I am busy in the garden and enjoying it very much even if it does make me sit up and take notice so far as so-called muscular action is concerned. To-day I got in two splendid fifteen ton loads of top soil for the corral or what we call the fruit farm. This adobe is terrible to work with but excellent soil.

Now my dear boy be a good lad and worthy, as the Son of God. But ever watch your step. The enemy is not asleep and neither can the Christian Scientist afford to slip and let evil suggestion enter as his mind and control. So be very careful and worthy of your high calling and one Mary can be proud of.

Beth sends her warmest regards and my earnest love to you both.

Dear Joseph E. J.:

Just a line to tell you if I haven’t already done so in another of my letters that I have a brand new Belvidere Plymouth, Red body and Cream top waiting for our dear friend Mrs. Beth to return from the hospital where she has been for 2 weeks with some fool thing I know not even its name. But I telephoned her a few minutes ago and she is to come home this week when she will begin to drive it and have the time of her life for I have been taking lessons preparatory to my renewing my license so that in case of necessity I could drive the car for her and we would not be stranded here unable to move.

I like the feel of it tremendously, power everything. So easy to drive it is just getting on to no clutch and no gears.

Your friend’s secretary introduced me to the firm we bought it from, Mr. Atchison of that firm’s name. She said he is an excellent man. His place of business is San Pedro six miles from here but handy enough to go to. I know Mrs. Munro will like the whole outfit and the agreement is Mr. Stake the instructor will also instruct her as much as she wants although she has run a power car before.

Nothing new to report except that divine Love is seen more and more each day as directing one and all which means the kingdom of heaven here on earth.

I know this is so with Mary and you and my love to you both.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

Thanks for your letter of the 3rd to our friend which I am returning to you in this. Also for the clippings.

I am glad to say Mrs. Munro is back home again but not any too fine by a long way. I don’t know what they did to her but they certainly took a pretty strong woman and made her a pretty weak one. Which of course is one big lie. It is interesting that I am unable to voice audibly hardly a word of Science and that is all right. Each one must work things out in his own way. It is all the way there is for each one. I hate to see her suffer however. Now don’t you write to her one word about this. It is her own business and she must be allowed to handle it in her own way. I feel and I have to be satisfied with that rightly. Jesus did not many wonderful works in certain conditions of thought because of their unbelief the Bible tells us, so we need not feel any disappointment for God is in His Holy heaven and is governing one and all so we know all is well in spite of lying sense. My typewriter is a little on the bum etc.

My best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

Thank you for yours of the 27th at Mary’s dictation, a wise girl indeed.  Thank her and tell her I appreciate the love of you two very deeply.  Thank you also for your letter to C—.  I do not think he is worth the effort.  When Ephraim is joined to his idols leave him alone is the command.  I find this so necessary with Mrs. Munro and I know she has to come through God’s direction and only that. She is a grand and noble thought but as fixed in her ideas as petty nearly Niagara, so divine Love dictates “they shall all be taught of me”.

I am going on Thursday when Mildred comes down, back with her to pay her my long promised visit for a few days.  Just now both Robert and Janet are here.  Of course Janet goes back to her school of long promised visit for a few days.  Just now Robert and Janet are here.  Of course Janet goes back to her school f nursing tomorrow I guess, but Bob is here right along. And her sister will be out too she said, so she will be taken care of all right.  I am here talking of our dear friend Beth, not Mildred.  She is steadily improving but not yet her old self in belief but such determination that she is gaining all the time.  Some moment she will put that same determination back of her acceptance of Christian Science and you will have a really genuine one.

My love to you both.
Herbert W. Eustace.

Dear Joseph E. J:–

Thank you for your pile of past history that you sent Air-mail and which arrived safely. Now I am returning it to you and my advice to you is to get rid of the whole thing or put in your archives for dunder-heads unlike you and me who through Christian Science know better, to ponder over and get nowhere. It is the present that holds the Mind and cause and God lives in eternal laws and here and now upholds His throne. That is not correctly quoted I think but you know what it means to let the dead bury the dead, follow thou Me.

My best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. J:–

Thank you for your “bunch” of mail. All very interesting as usual but too much rash language for a true metaphysician. I am returning the ones asked for. Why be so hasty with your tongue. I understand perfectly your provocation and agree with your condemnation of such folly but violent language is weakness not strength. Mrs. Eddy in your reference to the TRIAL in S & H was wholly impersonal. Try to be that it pays. Hypocrisy uncovers itself, so sooner or later. Wait on God but it is right to denounce evil but be impersonal if you want to bless which you do? Your letter to our friend the Doctor is over his head which you do not want your words to ever be. Be simple and you get somewhere. I do not mean by this that our friend is not ready for any Science but it should be put in every day language. That same with our dear friend Mrs. Munro who as yet has but caught perhaps the faintest gleam of metaphysics. It takes time and immense patience. I avoid the subject with her because it only antagonizes I can readily see.

Thanks for invitation from you both to see FROG POND. Sometimes I will doubtless for God moves in His own way to bless one and all. You are foolish to “wrestle” with yourself about your being in Los Angeles at a critical time, for you could no more play the part of Judas which had to be played than you can move without belief of matter from your home to California. You could not have done it, then why try to figure out something that was I am glad to say not your part. Be satisfied then that God has you always in your right place.

My love and best of all good to Mary and you.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Sunday morning, Dec. 11, 1955

Dear —– —–:

Mr. —– —-’s letter to Mildred telling her of your would-be encounter with what malicious argument would declare was something harder than you, only reached us last evening. It was sent to her at the ranch and evidently was not written for quite a little while after the malicious attack took place.

Now, first of all my dear child, I want to point out to you that, as the Christian Scientist, you are never for one instant dealing with effect or things. You are always as the metaphysician dealing with malicious suggestion in other words pure hypnotic deviltry.
Allow nothing to deceive you on this point. If you do, you are as powerless as trying to correct three times three are eight with two times two are four. Tis true two times two are four but never in Kingdom-come will that fact do one thing in righting three times three as eight you know this. Then be on your toes and do not let fool ignorance blind you to exactly what is operating as direct malicious argument.
In your ignorance you were deceived into turning to the darkened sense that had just fallen for one of the darkest crimes in history, calling darkness light, and joined the band of conspirators determined to destroy the Light of C.C.T. even as rascally evil joined the Next Friend’s Suit in the form of persons, places and things to annihilate Science and Health and incidentally the glorious avenue through which that life-saving Revelation had dawned on human belief. The purpose and intent were deadly and what happened to all taking part in the villainous plot. They fell with it.

Now this plot to destroy C.C.T. was identically the same evil mind at work, and it too fell to the ground and those with it. Now you might say, but why should maliciousness attack —– —–? Because —– —– refused to join with the conspirators and so aligned belief on the side of God, and this automatically brought forth the claim of the negation, wholly impersonally but not less malicious and devilish because it didn’t declare itself for just what it was, but hiding under the garment of natural ills appearing to her as an accident. Isn’t that the nature of the beast always hiding under the mask of innocence and doing its damndest to destroy.

Doesn’t Mrs. Eddy demand that the Christian Scientist call error animal magnetism and then instead of handling disease doesn’t she say handle animal magnetism? Have you been doing this or have you been running hither and thither seeking material aid and finding none because it was not matter that was ever to be dealt with but malicious argument, and all because you took your stand on the side of God, when evil confronted you with its conspiracy to destroy utterly C.C.T. For this your would-be friends do not love you, any more than Miss Sibyl Wilbur’s former friends loved her for correcting the lies of evil about Mrs. Eddy, but turned a busy career of having all the writing to do she could possibly do, stripped her of every bit of work and landing her high and dry, until the Board of Trustees in the form of the Pub. Society went to her rescue and freed her from the villainy and she lived as that saying is, happily afterwards, but not until the evil was pointed out and she had to see it, that it was not persons, although clothed in the garb of friends, that was trying to destroy her, but pure unadulterated evil.

You must see this very fact. You stood for Truth and your would-be friends are led to hate you, though claiming the reverse, and that hatred for what you did appears in any old evil language that will most torment and hurt.
Evil has only one purpose and that is to destroy. You have offended evil and its purpose is to destroy and encourage you to think that an accident occurred. No accident ever occurred. You never fell in a bath tub, or out of one, and where is the only eye or head to be damaged if such a fall could take place?

Isn’t God All-in-all? Where is there room then for ought else? Jerk yourself loose from this mesmerism and get on your feet (understanding) and don’t be whipped around the place. No claim is ever a thing. It is always the one lie, animal magnetism, and must be handled as such. Be not deceived. God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man thinketh in his heart so is he. What are you thinking in your heart? – that you did fall, that you did hurt yourself and so forth? You never did. Get some of the spirit of our colored friend and realize it TAIN’T SO and the whole lie vanishes spontaneously. This is Christian Science and nothing else is. As Mrs. Eddy so beautifully puts it, “When thought is lost in the immanence of Mind the healing takes place.” Not the immanence of matter but Mind.

My love to you,
Herbert W. Eustace

Dear Mary and Joseph:–

What a Christmas you never saw when your lovely gifts all came in and were spread out on the dining room table with that wonder center piece, the glorious little White and Green Christmas tree. Such a gem all hung beautifully with tiny bells in various colours. Mildred just came in as I was unpacking both boxes and she was amazed as Dorothea will be too. I wish Mrs. Munro could see it all and especially the tree. That is the sort of thing she dotes on and someday when I am going down I will certainly take it along with me for I intend to keep it. It is such a work of art in glass.

The basket, all the other things were loaded into, is equally fine and will be used and treasured a long time. Every imaginable jellie and jam was in the assortment to say nothing of cakes and cookies galore. The whole box has to be seen to be appreciated. It was what I call a sail boat basket, and it was loaded as I believe the nautical term is to the gall yards. It is as truly wonderful and I thank you both very much for giving them to us. It is the greatest assortment of gifts I ever had given me either at Christmas or any other time.

But now my dear boy I want to say something to you. Do you not know as a Christian Scientist, I have been receiving and giving no gifts at Christmas time except a few perhaps to children for a lot over fifty years and here you come like a typical Santa Claus, loaded to the hilt, and land them right at our door. Now it was awfully dear of you both but please never do it again. Mrs. Eddy knew far better than you or I can possibly know with out limited sense of Christ how wise her judgment always was and the wise Christian Scientist never departs from it, so with a deep deep thank you my dear friends this ends all that sort of giving. I long for heaven not earth and I long for it right here and now. Spiritual things not material ones, but thank you just the same this time. Mildred is off with Dorothea tomorrow taking Gullan down to her relatives in Phoenix. She will be back in a week.

May the joy and truth of “Blest Christmas morn” be with you Christmas Day and every day and I know the New Year is filled with every good thing for you both. As Mrs. Eddy says “What joy is ours as Christian Scientists. Infinite Love all our own. Tireless Love watching our waiting, Pointing the way. Guiding our footsteps. Turning them hither and thither as Wisdom directs. Then when the lesson is learned. Supplying the need and ending the warfare.” This is your joy both of you. My love to you both.

You two dear people:–

This little apartment is literally full of your lovely flowers and all your sweet and generous gifts of pretty nearly every kind and in such overwhelming quantities. You make me think of that dear home-maker of mine Mrs. Munro who sends me cookies and things she makes and knows I like them and sends them to last me a lifetime almost. She is so afraid I will not eat enough and sends strict instructions to poor Mildred to make me do so and so when poor Mildred all her life has had all she could do to stop me making her do things, and now the table is turned and Mrs. Munro tries to make her make me do things in the way of eating and what to eat? Funny world this! No wonder Shakespeare said “Each man in his time plays many parts. They have their exits and their entrances”. In the end all get their exits permanently, “the wind passeth over it and it is gone and the place knows it no more”.

That is just about it in my being in San Jose even after these few short years away. It is as though I had never been there. I have left it all behind me and neither I nor the place know one another any more.

But to return to your many gifts. The flowers are just perfectly lovely and the two flowering plants are doing splendidly and that glorious bunch of carnations is a wonder in their Pine setting. An immense bowl of them and Mildred has just telephoned me. She and Dorothea took Gullan down to her relatives in Phoenix for Christmas and they are now at Paso Robles on their return and I am so glad she will be here to see your wondrous array of beauty. That is the flowers, there are all the jams and jellies and Biscuits and what nots. You must not do such a thing again and I mean it. I have them all laid out on the dining room table and they stare me in the face and try to shame me that I am neglecting them. I tell them though that I am only one and there are enough good things there for a dozen.

Well you were both very dear and I thank you deeply. It is all Love’s own doing and you are embraced in that Love and so reap its reward. Yes, Christmas is truly for the children but do you practise that young lady and young man?

We have been having some tremendous supplies of water given us and that makes every real Californian rejoice. I always tell people you are not a genuine Californian if you ever murmur at rain. Rain is the joy of California. Without it where would the state be? I am an old time Californian before all the new ways of getting water to your ranches came about and so I appreciate water at its full value.

And now my dear friends I know what 1956 holds for you both, infinite good, less personality and all that that statement of Mrs. Eddy’s means and implies “What joy is ours as Christian Scientists. Infinite Love all our own. Tireless Love watching our waiting.”

Much love to you both and I thank you deeply for your genuine friendship.

Herbert W. Eustace.

15 Hawthorne Way,
San Jose, California. January 6th. 1956

Dear Mrs. Davenport,

I had a telephone call this morning from our friend Joseph Johnston of New York and in the course of our conversation he told me that you had actually yourself made those delicious jams and jellies and cookies etc. etc. yourself that you brought to me in his and Mary’s name just before Christmas.

It was good enough of you to bring them to me with those two fine lads of yours as armour bearers for you. I cannot express my deep appreciation enough for your doing this. It was really awfully good of you all and I would long ago have written you, which was in my heart to do before hearing this last news that you were the originator of many of the things, for you know when I tasted those wonderful chocolate squares, I don’t know their name, but I did immediately think I had never tasted such chocolate cakes like them before, they were so rich and good. Now I see why I was puzzled that such could be bought. You certainly are some cook. Don’t give those lads too many good things to eat. Boys thrive better on hard-tack. A boy was never meant to be pampered and those fine chaps of yours show no sign of being pampered, see that they never are.

Man is not something that has a beginning and ending. He is the very activity of divine Principle, divine Love, God, and as such divine sonship he inevitably already expresses all that God, infinite good, means and is. Let them realize that, and then, they will spontaneously look to God for every direction and move and like Jesus all things will be possible to them. They are as unlimited as their Maker, that is why they must always start their every thought from God, infinite Love then they will express Love, in all their dealings with man and beast, and so insure themselves heaven right on earth.

My every good wish to you for the New Year. It has only good, with it, every instant for each one of you, and that is my earnest desire for you all.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Dear Joseph Johnston:–

I have just written Mrs. Dorothy Davenport for not only making those delicious jams, jellies and cookies etc. etc. but for being your messenger and bringing them with her two escorts, those fine young chaps of hers, all loaded down with the wonderful things you and Mary had sent me. They are still going as strong as ever, — as also, the lovely plants. It was amazingly good of you all.

When are you going to stop looking back and thinking and saying I ought to have done this or that. Where is infinite Intelligence while you are kicking up your heels according to your own statement doing or not doing some thing you later feel you should have done. That sort of thinking gets one no where because it is based on the absolute fallacy that you are an independent actor and do as you please, instead of what you truly are, the evidence and mouthpiece of God in all your ways.

Stop this nonsense and your eyes will open to His guidance every instant.

You do too much talking my dear boy. You cannot always hear the voice of God because you abandon your post as listener, and want to be the Power itself. That spells failure every time. So quit it and I want to speak of one personal thing. I made an exception with you when I came through New York in telling you one thing about what I had been doing in Canada. I never tell my affairs to a single person. I only did it, about Javelin, with you, because I was directed to do so, but I did not think you would go and call up Todd and Doyle and Tarsnik etc. and spill all you knew about me, when I purposely told them nothing. It isn’t I have anything to hide, but I never, never tell my affairs to anyone. My own family in the old days never knew one thing except Bess, about my business affairs. She alone knew. I have always stood right there. Now I am going to ask you Joseph Johnston to please never talk Herbert Eustace over with anyone and I mean anyone. Stop all this personal stuff for I have no use for any of it. From now on I shall not talk to you about Javelin any more so do not ask me any questions about it. You are apparently in touch with those you can get information from. When I looked into the company and went East to do so it was with one purpose to get a fine well managed growth proposition where I could safely put some funds and not have to give special thought to them. I am tired of bothering with different stocks. I have for many years done that and I wanted something more conservative and permanent, and when I examined Javelin I came to the conclusion, after discussing it all most carefully with their chief engineer Paul Pesonen a most unique and I would say learned engineer with wide experience, and he explained to me on the maps the great care in diamond drilling etc. they had used in proving up their immense territory, I was completely satisfied I had found the sort of security I was looking for, that here at last was a real growth stock run by what seemed to me a fine outstanding lot of men and with a mighty wise friend among them named F. PaysoTodd who through his writings I had become aware that he was a real New England conservative, a man after my own heart. In talking to him I found him just that, but I looked to God to direct me and not to a person and if there is any glory or honour due it is to Him alone, for I certainly of myself could have done nothing, and in Todd I found a very interesting thinker and writer. You should not have talked to him about me and Christian Science. Yes talk about Christian Science to anyone you please of course, but you have no right to drag my name into such a divine subject. And so weaken your whole presentation.

You know my dear friend that I do not wish to appear unkindly or unappreciative of your always good will to me and C.C.T. but I do wish you would leave me out entirely. I belong with God and nowhere else and there I want to stay. Every so-called material belief is of a few days and full of trouble as the Psalmist wrote. It doesn’t need to be full of trouble provided you will take it out of matter and place it where it can only belong with divine Mind. “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation for God is All-in-all”.

Some time if you ever near the Yale campus, drop in and see the Registrar and find out definitely whether James C. Cassell Jr. was an undergraduate or a graduate of Yale and if possible what was his record. Also another thing sometime when you are motoring out west and go through Arizona and New Mexico find out whether the report that this same man was ever a member of any Christian Science Church in either State and was dismissed, for any cause and if possible what the cause was claimed to be. It might be wise to know what manner of men the miniature Next Friends Suit was composed of. Not that it is of any real importance any more than to-day we are to toss a penny, what stock Judas came from, etc. or where he graduated from, if he ever did and so forth?

Remember Johnston as a sina qua non in Christian Science is this primary fact that the more so-called minds there are mixed up in your affairs the harder it is for you to keep your gaze on divine Principle as All-Mind. Never get away from this fact or you will find yourself lost. One Mind is your basis then keep away from minds many which is expressed as people knowing your affairs, especially your financial affairs for that is the weapon malicious mind uses the most for tormenting people with. Tell so-called mortal mind nothing and it knows nothing about you. A word to the wise is sufficient.

My very best to you both. I hold you in deep esteem but be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove. The tongue is what supplies the serpent with its food for slander and interference. Watch then and again Jesus said WATCH. Watch what? Your tongue.

Love to you both,

Herbert W. Eustace

Dear Joseph E. J:–

Thank you for your package of letters received yesterday.

I think your analysis of 1955 and its relation to Herbert W. Eustace is quite correct and I appreciate the analysis much as I always object however to ever being dragged into an analysis of any spiritual nature but I think you have handled your 1955 year very intelligently and it is interesting to see how so many things fall in line with your deductions. You have held to the metaphysical point of view right through.

With regard to your letter to Mrs. N– I feel you were justified in all that you wrote. Her conceit and ignorance always in a way have been appalling in a way. But you know there is nothing more conceited than ignorance.

To show where Mrs. N– stood in her relationship to the chief we will say conspirator James Cassell, this is what she wrote to me in one of her many letters I hardly read or answer. “I like Mr. Cassell very very much and so do all I know that have met him. He is very sincere I think”. She was fooled and sold completely. Your analysis of the reason why is correct that nonsense of practitioner and patient, in other terms man being God.

Since I have been in San Jose, Mrs. N– has been hanging around here trying to get in touch with Mildred but really with me. She has telephoned several times wanted to see me and I have flatly refused to see her that there was nothing to see her about. I think she has quit that now but her very persistence in face of flat refusals to talk to her at all is part and parcel of that claim of man being God and the silly belief that if you stay with it you will get your way. Yes, you will if your way is God’s way but not otherwise. Human will is the devil and all the devil there is and they who try it fall with the devil. Mrs. B– is in exactly the same position, conceit could never avert the effects of deceit as Mrs. Eddy points out so positively with both of them.

But a dream is ever a dream and that anything that is a departure in the least from divine Principle is but a dream for God is never less than All.

Thank you also for the copies of statements by Mrs. Eddy that you sent for me to keep. You are very kind and I do appreciate deeply your keen analysis. Keep person out and you will progress. My best to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Thank you for your copy of your letter to Mrs. Hachten and Mrs. Merrow and thanks to you which I am herewith returning to you. It is very analytical and I hope not above your reader, leading him to personality instead of to Principle, but perhaps not, but be very careful how you bring in H.W.E. I know how clear you are on it all yourself but that is not always enough if you are writing to people. Your language must be equally explicit. You are dealing in writing Mrs. Hachten and Mrs. Merrow with two very earnest metaphysical thoughts so you are pretty safe, but sometimes when I read what you say about H.W.E. and the exalted sense you have of C.C.T. and what it means, all of which is correct on C.C.T. in one sense of the word, but it makes shivers run down my back as the expression is, hoping against hope that neither you nor your reader can be deceived into one thought of personality or your fine vision and work would be largely in vain. So please watch out every instant.

I may inclose you in this letter a copy of a little article I want to write if I can get it as I want it on Jesus’ statement CALL NO MAN YOUR FATHER UPON THE EARTH. It is so very important that I would like to send out a line on it but it is most difficult to handle such a subject wisely. If it cannot be done wisely then better not do it at all. Look it over and make any suggestions you wish. I shall be glad to have them but keep no copy even for yourself and return mine please with any comments you choose. Ask Mary to glance at it but do not say one word to her, but notice what effect it has on her and whether it is enlightening in any way. It is not finished by a long shot. I full well realize, but tell her I shall appreciate any little comment she may feel like making or none at all, except I would like a frank statement if she feels like saying it, “I do not get anything specially from the reading of it.” I feel strongly my inadequacy in ability to express what I know and feel on this subject. It is highly important and the understanding of it can carry so much of good to one and all.

That was very good of you to send Mildred and me both radio reproductions of Mary’s excellent speech. She speaks as one having authority and not a mere scribe. That is always nice if it is backed up by understanding as hers is.

I had a line from Pesonen from Germany saying the ore conferences with both Germany and England were going satisfactorily. They will be back at the right time and then you will hear what was done. Place your confidence in God’s Allness wisely guiding and directing one and all and to the ultimate blessing of all. Javelin is a long term proposition and I am willing to let it have all the time needed. I am satisfied Todd with his 1959/60 date for Javelin to show what it can do is correct. It has the ore and the steel mills want the ore it has, then they can work together under God and there is no malicious mind or minds that can interfere in the slightest because God is the one and only Mind. Put your confidence in the God of all the earth Who does do right.

My best to you both as always.
Herbert W. Eustace

P.S. I will send my article next trip. I appreciate very much yours and Mary’s regard for Mrs. Munro. She is an excellent woman and is perfect for my need, and I hope and feel it is mutual, because I can take off her shoulders much of the grinding of finances and leave her free together with a deep sense of genuine appreciation of what she has done for me and is doing and will do. More I do not, nor could ask. I consider Mrs. Munro of the highest type of true Christian. I respect her more than highly and I do appreciate yours and Mary’s keen appreciation of her sterling character and God does and will bless her.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

You know I was reading over again that excellent answer you made to Rowell, the trustee about Orcutt’s lies in his book, and I just wanted to tell you that was a really masterful piece of work and should be preserved. Sometime it will be read with the deepest interest by Scientists. You missed no points whatever and you did it all in a beautiful spirit and yet firmly. That is the way to write leaving all invectives out. They add nothing usually. Of course it is true Jesus at times handed it out without gloves but he never lost sight of the impersonality of it all and we must do the same if our words are to be helpful. But I do want to congratulate you on the way you did that splendid job and sometime it must be published and it will be.

California is still having plenty of rain. And yet I was reading today Los Angeles is behind its normal, still. At Mildred’s ranch yesterday they had two and a half inches that is pretty steep in one day. It did no damage.

What a marvelous statement that is of Mrs. Eddy’s “The wickedest man is but a temporary eclipse, not quite total, and in the great forever he must rotate toward Truth and Life.”

This takes us all in with one infinite, overwhelming love.

My best to you both.

Dear Joseph E.J.
Here are the sheets I was going to send you on CALL NO MAN YOUR FATHER UPON THE EARTH.

Please read them and for the Lord’s sake keep them to yourself and say nothing to anyone. I may not send it out at all and I want nothing said about it. Please ask Mary to glance it over and as said in my other letter just say whether she got anything out of it at all and, of course, I shall appreciate her adding to or taking from all she wishes and that applies also of course to you my dear chap but no copies and no talking.

I have one deep conscientious request to make of you Joseph E. Johnston and that is from this moment forward you will do no more talking, writing or phoning to Mrs. Munro on the subject of Christian Science. It simply antagonizes her and does far more harm than good and I earnestly request you absolutely do no more of it. It has made it vastly more difficult for me, so drop it at once.

My very best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Thank you for two good letters from you. When you stay with Science and forget personality you write like a Major and your stuff is sound and to the point. Thank you also for the item about Cassell he evidently did take a degree of some kind at Yale, too bad he didn’t while he was about it imbibe the real thing that Yale was established for, to make better men and women. But God attends to that and in due time will bring all to the fold, as you so excellently expressed it to W–. All that nonsense is a form of insanity. From the very beginning I saw that his (W–’s) fatal trouble was conceit. He wanted to grab everything and parade it as his own from the very first, deeds you gave him and Captain Wilkerson’s expose of the estoppel clauses. But don’t bother yourself about that God attends to all in His own way and Blesses one and all.

I didn’t know Mrs. W– was in S.F. Is that a permanent arrangement or just a visit?

I am looking forward to seeing your better half the end of this week. I got a wire from her proposing Sunday but she gave me no information as to her whereabouts etc. before Sunday so I am unable to show her any attention until she arrives. But we will have a nice visit anyway and if I can do anything for her I shall be delighted. My very best to you both. I have settled on my leaflet so will send you a copy tomorrow. Send it right back please.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Thank you for your various interesting letters which you have sent me to read and which I am returning the ones you ask for back. I am also sending you a correct copy of the Psychologist with my letter included for I did not want to send out a story on so-called hypnotism without the necessary Scientific correction.

I notice you indicated that there would be more leaflets on various subjects you are imagining. I will frankly say God will have some job to make me write any more. I do not want to write and I am thoroughly in accord with Mrs. Eddy’s statement that “writing, lecturing, preaching, etc” is not Christian Science but healing the sick is. Therefore of my own self I shall write no more, so do not be implying something more is coming as I see you did in your letter to the Doctor. There will be no more as far as I know and am concerned. The Easter salutation was just an anniversary of one of the greatest days in my whole experience, when God was very very near and took me into a wondrous freedom. I felt I could commemorate that without infringing on the completeness of what God has already written in Mrs. Eddy’s glorious Science and Health and her other divine utterances, and I will include what we all call C.C.T. But there comes an end to words and works are the necessity. Your book will fill its necessary place when you have it finished by stopping this eternal letter writing to people and so hindering your own finishing of your own book. No man can serve two masters. Stop trying to do so and leave people alone and attend to the job God has given you to do. Evil I think is trying to fool you and make you believe you are advancing the finishing of your Foundational Facts by butting into every Tom, Dick and Harry’s thought, by telling your whole story to each individual who bothers you with a letter and then sending copies of theirs and your reply to anyone that will accept and express their appreciation of them. Leave mortal mind alone and do not try to enlighten it. Let your book do that and stop wasting most of your time fooling with individual people. It will not produce results and comes under Mrs. Eddy’s condemnation of “writing” instead of healing and that it is not Christian Science. Do not fool yourself or try to help me fool myself because I will not be fooled. It may have been partly that fool writing of that Church letter of Mrs. B–’s that so completely through her off the beam and made her imagine she had done something wonderful when she had done no such thing except cripple herself.

So far as your friend the Doctor is concerned my advice to you is leave him alone and let God handle him and show him the way as He has done so beautifully all the way along his journey. You can ball that all up with miles long letters, etc, turning his thought from what he has always stayed with, healing and end by mixing it up with founding facts which will never heal one thing except ignorance and our colored friend showed that human ignorance didn’t either delay or prevent her healing the cases that came to her, whereas the confusing of her thought with other things could easily do so. Be wise and not obstinate

You are a dear chap like that blessed wife of yours but you are your own worst enemy and write and talk too much. My love is with you both and what is far more important God is with you every instant.

April 1, 1956.

Dear Mary and Joseph:-

Your perfectly lovely array of glorious white Carnations etc. etc. came in a little while ago and they are truly wonderful all of them perfectly white. Thank you so much for them. I shall enjoy them for a long time for I am sure they will keep perfectly. In your note Joseph J. of the 23rd. you asked if I knew whether C--l had a little “Rest food shop” on Wiltshire between the Town House and Gaylord. I haven’t the faintest idea but I have heard he was practicing on Alexandria Street but I really don’t know. I am leaving him to God to take care of, as well as all the conspirators. I do not feel I know enough to handle such conditions of thought, so better leave them alone. I have a strong feeling that CALL NO MAN YOUR FATHER UPON THE EARTH will handle them properly without any butting in. It will answer all their questions about H.W.E. You and Mary were very generous about the little Pamphlet and please tell her her few comments were much appreciated, and of course what you said Joseph J. were equally appreciated. Thank you both. And now with all that Easter means and is, as my every good wish to you both and tell Mary also please that her few minutes with Mildred and me were a rich remembrance of her sweet peace and charm. All good to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace

P.S. This has been a day of wondrous rejoicing to me. My dear God showed his loving arms ever around those who trust Him. H.W.E.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Well here I am back home again and my it is good to be stepping on the turf again. It is lovely here. Beth Munro will be home Wednesday the fourth and it will be good to see her. Janet came in this morning but her Mother had to wait till reservations could be had and that was Wednesday so we will meet her Wednesday night. Janet says they have had a lovely time and that her mother has enjoyed it immensely. Bob as you doubtless know from something I probably wrote you, joined his father in Ohio immediately after graduating because he is taking a course in Trigonometry at a college there so as to enter Syracuse University or West Point I don’t know just which he is aiming at. I would like to see him enter Syracuse and go on into Electronics which to me seems the only sane thing for a young chap to do these days. The whole world is hanging on Electronics, then what is the use of anything less than the most important. West Point is a splendid career but that is all where Electronics has the world at its feet.

Thank you very much for your clippings and letter which were awaiting my arrival here. Mildred and Dorothea drove me to the airport in San Jose and then drove my car with all my stuff in it down and arrived next day. Janet to-day has driven it off to her hospital work. I have no further use for the little Plymouth and it will be most handy to her to come out and see her mother when she is off, so I gave it to her. She is a good driver and went off very happy and I am glad to have the car used as during my whole stay in San Jose I do not believe I drove it 100 miles. Mildred took me everywhere in her car and had to run the Plymouth occasionally to just keep battery etc. going. So Janet seemed to fall heir to it exactly rightly and it will be of immense help to her and she will be able to run over and see her mother here frequently. Beth Munro will be home Wednesday.

Thank you for your items on Javelin. It is showing up very satisfactorily and I think our friend Todd will prove exactly right on his 1960 prognostications. He was as you said in your letter a little premature with a few of his statements but he is a thoughtful fellow and as you also said other advisory people are falling right in line. The bigness of Javelin is difficult to grasp. It has such enormous possibilities with its immense territory and its various minerals that it is almost impossible to figure very closely. No I do not take Investors or the other one you mentioned but Fiftch was sent me with their statement the other day and shows which way the wind is blowing. They will all fall in line one by one because they have nothing but simple facts to record and nothing to boost but something to tell.

I should fancy that by the end of 1958 things will be moving quite fast with Javelin. I noticed one statement by Doyle saying that the earnings by the end of 1958 should warrant the consideration of dividends.

Your letter that you wrote to Mrs. N-- was perfectly correct and I should absolutely avoid any correspondence with her it seems to me. Nothing to be gained by such a condition of thought. She positively said as I remember it, that you had sent her copies of my letters to you of so and so. That is what I referred to. She called me up the day after I got here from the Allens and wanted to drive out. I told her simply I did not have anything to talk to her about and good bye. She knew I meant it and ended the call. I have much better prospects for the lodgment of true Science than to expand energy on such conditions of thought. God knows better what to do and how to do it than I do. And in listening to His voice it seems to say LEAVE IT ALONE.

I am returning the clippings with thanks. I have taken the Miner and seen the statements in it of Javelin. I have stopped it however now.

I expect your garden is lovely and that you and Mary revel in it.

My best to you both. Herbert W. Eustace.

P.S. I am always glad to have for my Javelin file any data you care to send me. Thanks. Mrs. W– has more to her than most people. I do not remember what I said to her when I wrote that note. Yes, that Taint’s so story is excellent. What were you thinking of for a leaflet?

July 13, 1956.

Dear —-

I wouldn’t waste any time on planning what I would do about eating this or that thing or a meal. Paul had some good common sense and wasn’t it Paul who said to eat what is set before you and say nothing for conscience sake? I guess that holds today as well as yesterday although I wouldn’t say all of Paul’s statements as generally read are worth having much time wasted on them, although doubtless understood as he meant them, they are good for us all, but we have a greater than Paul with us not alone in Christ Jesus, but that angel of Light, Mary Baker Eddy.

Now about eyes. . . Is it ever eyes that are wrong, or is it straight malicious animal magnetism? Of course it is only the latter or you would not even have a sense of imperfection and a sense it always merely is, never a thing wrong, as you so well know. Then be not tempted to handle things or no progress is made unless in some mysterious way you could reach and get lost in that eminence of Mind wherein is only infinite Love and its ever presence.

The details of argument have nothing whatever to do with any claim because the same arguments could attach to the minutia of any claim so not much value except to bring the so-called mortal’s thought into accord with Principle where it is lost.

You naturally read as you gain understanding into everything of Science and Health and all truth, your freer sense and larger viewpoint. This is inevitable, so expect a constantly enlarging viewpoint and you will have it.

Good for you on weight, but never forget “your substance” outweighs the universe and that might be some weight!

Yes, unless one is mighty careful the constant sense of people becomes a burden and we think we can flee into the wilderness and get away from it, but wouldn’t it necessarily follow you wherever you thought you could hide, until you find yourself hidden in the secret place of the most High which of course means Mind. Then all unlike infinite good t’aint so, t’aint so, and lo! the kingdom of heaven is knocking at your door.

Enjoy your communion with Spirit which is all a vacation can possibly mean. I am enclosing you a couple of “CALL NO MAN” with my very best.

Dear J. E. J.:–

Here I am on another visit to Mildred. Bob came home and was so with his mother; I thought it a good time to run up here and see how my old town was doing.

Todd called me and told me of his trip to Newfoundland and Labrador and how finally he found everything going along. He seemed very pleased and last word said don’t sell Javelin, it is worth one hundred dollars. He has said that many times before and I will go him one better, that before Javelin gets through it will finally sell for one hundred and fifty for its property is immense and Javelin will end up with leasing a lot of its superfluous acreage to some of the big steel companies who will put up their own mills, etc and just pay royalty to Javelin until its coffers bulge and incidentally Newfoundland prospers equally which is clearly Smallwood, the premier’s idea I judge for he scotched a lie promulgated by some enemies of Javelin that Newfoundland was going to repudiate its guarantee of Javelin’s bonds which Smallwood didn’t do a thing to that lie, but said on the contrary Javelin was destined to be the biggest iron ore mine in the world and from what I have studied of their properties he is quite right.

Todd said he was making a return trip to the Javelin properties in September and invited me to go with him. I shall do that very thing if my dear home-maker is happy and free and is her old self. She has had so much hospital stuff it is pretty hard, but Tain’t so thank God, and never has been so, in spite of all the devilish malpractice she has had to endure. I wish she could go along with me and next year she will but this time the accommodations are not good enough I think.

Todd also implied that with in a few weeks some interesting news would be issued that would run the stock up to thirty dollars a share. But that is nothing to what it will finally be, but is in the right direction any way. I think one thing Todd was counting on is the fact Doyle has been in Europe and sometime is to return this month I believe and doubtless will bring back in his pocket several good contracts for the rest of the 6000000 to put, tax, the mill at its capacity. France and Italy etc. both need ore and others doubtless too to say nothing of a lot of Steel companies in this country also need much more than they have and are beginning to look to Javelin again. Well God has enough for all and no one can have what belongs to another so everybody has all he needs to supply every need. Infinite Love has no preferences but is universal in its adaptations and bestowals as Mrs. Eddy has said so faithfully.

I know you are both busy. Start every thought from God and look to Him as the Giver of all good. In other words Spirit is All and there is no matter to make fools of mortals. Please give my love to your dear wife and tell her to ever see infinite Good alone as husband and governed alone by God and never by malicious mind with its humbugging lies of pleasure and pain in matter. That is pure illusion and she knows it.

My best to you my dear chap. This above all to thine own self be true and it must follow as the night the day thou cans’t not then be false to any man, as Shakespeare so perfectly put it. Again my best-

Herbert W. Eustace

8-21-56

It just struck me whether you had a touch button or something on your strokes in signing your name or how do you calculate when to stop! That is one of your affectations, you goose, why don’t you sign your name so that it can be read. You like to read God’s name, divine Love, and you bet He always signs it so that it can be grasped by everyone, if they are willing and looking. And you are that very fellow that is ever so willing and so looking.

I expect to be at my home again by the 24th of September unless by any chance I have to run a quick trip East, but I shouldn’t be gone over two weeks, but I fortunately am nothing to count on, but will see you soon anyway.

In regard to your question about the “prayers in Christian Science churches shall be offered for the congregations collectively and exclusively”.

Of course that would necessarily be so, for in Christian Science one deals only with just one, one Cause and one effect, the one person would include the one congregation and that congregation would be divine Mind with you, and therefore would include also all person.

Just as in all treatment it is God with you and there is, as it were, no placing of the treatment whatever, God does His own placing.

That by-law was a gentle reminder that treatment, prayer, is never personal. That is all there is to it I feel.

Thank you for both your letters and your phone call. It was nice to hear your cheery voice and to know how naturally all things were moving with you. Good is the eternal law of being and so pervades and governs your every thought and act. It could not be otherwise or infinite Good would cease spontaneously to be infinite and being would collapse. But Good is and is All that is and maintains each one in perpetual harmony, doing and saying the right thing at the right moment every instant.

Remember you speak and write as the activity of God and only as such and the responsibility is not on you but on your Source. So have unbounded confidence that all that you are led to say is from on high and is as much for you to listen to and imbibe as for me and all.

Always maintain your position as listener and so as Mrs. Eddy says hear His voice and understand His word and so become His messenger.

Do not be anxious about anything but hold to the even tenor of your way quietly about your Father’s business.

Man never born and never dying is forever in heaven. He doesn’t have to get there or attain anything. He is now perfect and shows it forth in thought, word and deed.

You know all this then there is no need for me to remind you of what is so present with you.

You are a dear earnest chap and divine Love is ever with you.

My best to you.

Herbert W. Eustace

1957 Letters

Excerpts from letters on: CHURCH by Herbert W. Eustace C.S.B. 1957

“Man is the church of God, for he is that which represents divine Principle. Church is not a thing but a divine idea of Love, so you have never joined the church, because you are ever at one with Church. You know this, stand on what you know; do not talk about it but just be it.”

Of course, you have a perfect right as a Christian Scientist or anyone else, to attend the church of your choosing, or not to attend any church. What we all need to listen to is the voice of divine Love, but that voice fortunately does not need any edifice to be heard in. It does need, as the Bible puts it, a humble and a contrite heart to hear what He says, and that you have. (Kipling’s Recessional, P. 219) (Psalms 51:17; Isa. 57:15)

There is no need of your withdrawing from The Mother Church or a branch church that I know of. Do so if you wish but what is there to be gained by it; Nothing whatever that I can see. Church and man are synonymous terms, the idea of God. You cannot be less than man, can you? All those doings are really minor and need not concern you a bit. Handle animal magnetism by finding divine Love as embracing all that you mean by animal magnetism and when lost in the eminence of that REALIZATION, there is no evil to eliminate and all is well, as all there is. However, whatever you do, do not fall for the rottenness of mentally malpractising on The Church of Christ, Scientist, by accepting or repeating the lie that the Church of Christ, Scientist could ever be less than crowded. Watch: Jesus said.

You have nothing to do with Science and Health or any of Mrs. Eddy’s writings except to profit by them in the true redemption of thought from matter to divine Love. What Mrs. Eddy established she established it whether called organization or what not, because she realized God, divine intelligence, was directing her. That is enough. That is enough! I know you would be the last one calling himself a Christian Scientist to question your understanding against Mrs. Eddy’s.

May I be perfectly frank with you and say I would not knowingly contribute one cent to anything that was in the least degree trying to upset in the slightest what I feel Mrs. Eddy established. I have sufficient faith in infinite Love’s Allness to await the logic of events and allow God to do all the adjusting. Be the humble follower of Mrs. Eddy and you will serve divine Love in the best way possible because you will heal the sick not through vituperation, but reflecting that Love that is God. Damning is not the road to progress; so avoid it, but healing the sick is. Then do that always and Love will bless you abundantly. Do not live to find fault but only live to let men so see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Stay with what you know is true Science. I should judge you are running around too much and not staying with what you know is true. People who are looking here and there are not the ones to be trusted. Divine Love has given us, through Mrs. Eddy’s wondrous books and writings the full text of Christian Science and that Love has also given us in the C.C.T. the schoolroom book of Science and Health.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

You are a dear chap most generous in your letters and word of mouth, but please don’t waste your hard earned money on telephoning when an air mail is so soon on hand, unless it is essential for your happiness and you’d be a most terrible goose to allow language to be essential in anyway for your completeness and happiness. God is that ALL and only Him and who knows that better than you do.

But I do appreciate your kindly intent tremendously but please do not waste anything. Your letters are very informative and keep me well up on things of Javelin which are most interesting. You are and can continue to be a fine help to Doyle in holding him steady to his purpose, first to get Javelin into fine production and then to build up its wonderful empire, to, as Mrs. Eddy says, “to bless all mankind”, that is in need of that kind of a blessing. The “earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof”, so all good is for one and all. I know how well you realize this.

I had a fine letter from our friend Todd yesterday. Todd, while full of enthusiasm, is a typical New England conservative and I feel is a well balanced and a great help, as he has always been, to Javelin and its management. He has a keen sense for the fundamentals.

In one of your letters you asked me what I meant by putting D.V. after some of my statements as to what I expected or wanted perhaps to do. That D.V. is an old form used by some meaning, Deus Volens, God willing. It has always intrigued me and I sometimes fall into using it. I had an Uncle a very brilliant mathematician, a high Wrangler of Cambridge, also a clergyman and he used in his letters to often use D.V. and it always struck me as a child even how natural. If God is not willing what good is any action or thought.

It strikes me Johnston that our New York Joseph will end up being as fully posted on every detail of Javelin as he is on “FOUNDING FACTS”. That won’t hurt him, for understanding is true Wisdom. But see it all as God expressing Himself and only that and you will be free and happy.

We are enjoying rain in California and it is most welcome as it always has been since I have known California. We have also even seen snow in California again not just on the mountains but the lowlands too.

My love to you both. Remember, ever, there is but one Presence God, divine Love filling all space and you are His activity ever about your Father’s business and there is no animal magnetism for there is but one Mind.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Well don’t fall off your chair, but on the 21st. of this month I am going by plane to New Zealand for possibly a few weeks and stop on the way back for another few weeks at Hawaii and get back to California just about in time for a Labrador trip when of course I will see you for a good chat on my return journey via New York.

Well your judgment on Javelin going up was pretty correct for that is what it did do and was bound to do, for the one liar only voices its lie because the truth is right there with its fact and so the more active the lie the more does it show the truth about anything to be and its activity.

You are a dear chap to call me up so generously but I do wish you would use your typewriter instead of wasting so much money, when an air mail, especially Special Delivery, arrives so promptly. Why then telephone? Why not just write a few lines? And only a few hours difference in time of receipt. If I was buying and selling stocks it might be different but I am not. I can truly say what Mrs. Eddy said herself, I have too much of earth right now and all I want is more of heaven, Spirit and all things spiritual. Nothing else is worth while and is but for the fleeting moment, not that one should neglect opportunities to use and increase what one can but do not let it get too enticing, or it is pure animal magnetism.

With every good wish to you and Mary and the abundance of His love is with you every moment guiding and directing your every step and leading you in the paths of His righteousness.

Herbert W. Eustace

P.S. Of course I am taking Mrs. Munro with me for it is really for her sake I am going now. Her doctor feels strongly such a trip may be very helpful and I have felt so for a number of months. She needs a complete change and am so glad to be able to take her, but it is God alone that can and does really help. H.W.E.

Dear J.E.J.

Thanks very much for yours of 16 re Javelin and Mary’s article in Feb. McCalls.

Please thank her for it. It was as usual to the point and very good.

What you say about Javelin is correct and so in time it will grow its real value. It is not of man or matter. It is idea and so for ever governed by God and there is no malicious mind operating as animal magnetism in any other so-called nonentity to control, direct or influence its operation in any way. Only our Mind is and you know this. My first address in New Zealand will be Tasmanian Hotel, Auckland. How short or long I have no idea. May make it our headquarters for serving both islands. God will direct as He does all things. My best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. J.

Just a line to say that New Zealand is a very lovely state in its beautiful freshness and greenery, but it surely is in many ways crude. We are going next week on a motor trip for 21 days around both Islands and we are promised it will be most enjoyable. We are going on a Cook’s Conducted and after that we are going across to Sydney and then up by boat to Samoa and Tahiti and there on to Honolulu where we shall stay some time if we get what we would like in accommodations and if we do not like it we shall go back to California and then in May, before to see the Javelin outfit. Which a cablegram from our friend Todd looks as though interesting news might break loose any time now. It will sooner or later anyway. All is fine I know with you both. Mrs. Munro is stronger I am sure and will continue to be as God made her I know for that is the Law of Being.
Every good wish to you both.

Dear J.E.J.

Thus far on our way. Tomorrow we go to Apia, Samoa and Tahiti, where we have to stay 13 days as the flying boat from here only goes every 2 weeks and the ? of ? ? ? loaded planes down. We shall return and make for Honolulu the 23rd and will be at the Moana a week at least.

This is too much moisture for my fancy but lovely for grass and shrubbery.

Scenery is much the same every where in these Islands very green and fresh. ? ? and will agree nothing to speak of without individual understanding to progress. Christian Science as the our Saviour of many conditions is plainly evident and it will require C.S. in its true sense not merely in its religious element as a Church. Very best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

I have decided to leave here for New York and Montreal this coming Saturday 25th on the 9:00 A.M. United AirLines reaching New York at 8 P.M. If you will kindly engage a room for me with bath at that Hotel you sent me to last time I will appreciate it and I will go straight there and then telephone you. I decided to go early and have a chat with you before going on to Montreal for the meeting whenever it is to be held.

Then I think I will return to California via Toronto and see those fellows who are running Pronto Uranium. Of course after the trip to the Mines.

Your telephone call was most illuminating. Evidently Doyle and his crew have done a big job with those other steel men and Smallwood has been no small help I know. I shall be glad to get your papers and will bring them back with me for you.

By the way I have just received that book THE FAR WESTERN FRONTIER 1830 to 1860 you two dear people sent me and it is wonderful history and your book giving your Uncle’s career is most interesting and enlightening. Thank you very much for both of them. I shall gain a great deal of genuine history from them.

Will see you both very soon now. Every good wish.

Dear friend Merriman.:–

Both Johnston and I enjoyed your synopsis of your address. Speaking from the basis of absoluteness it could not help but be excellent. It doesn’t need any correcting except whatever you may give it your self. Always, as you do, look only to God the one infinite intelligence to show you just what you should do and say. When God intrusts one with a job He takes care of that one and the job for He is the one and only intelligence guiding as you so well know one and all.

I sent you some of the papers with the Javelin account in it and when the full report comes out you will get that which will give you all that took place at the meeting. One of the high lights of it was Smallwood the Premier of Newfoundland addressing the stock holders of Javelin and telling them why Newfoundland chose Javelin as the recipient of the marvelous gift of NALCO some 27000 squares miles of territory to mine and develop.

Things look very well for the company but it will be several years before I think dividends will appear for the whole thing is so vast it will take time to assess it all and get going but it is a fine long growth proposition and will stay with anyone for a hundred years if they will stay with it. I did not go up to the property in Labrador for I felt it was too big to grasp at this time so postponed it to next year when things will certainly be moving. Javelin is enlisting as many customers to whom to parcel out different mill-sites some of the big U.S. steel mills with an ultimate production, a few years hence, of some 22,000,000 tons of iron ore a year on which Newfoundland will receive some 22 cents a ton royalty each year which will mean a tremendous lot for schools etc. etc. for the Province and they are delighted at the prospect naturally. What blesses one has to bless all but patience is a virtue especially in Javelin.

I was thinking of going over to England for a few months to indulge my fancy around Glastonbury where Jesus spent some eighteen years of his life as a youngster from twelve to thirty and there pondered the deep things of God. Sometime I will do it if that is God’s will. In the meantime I decided to return to California and await here at my niece’s apartment, for His voice to show me just the way to go. I have been contemplating of course returning to Los Angeles and taking or making an office there on the order of the Los Altos Hotel where you may remember I stayed a month to sort of test it out.

My home at Rolling Hills is I feel too inconvenient for an office, too far out etc. I do not know just what I want. I should like a place surrounded with flowers or plenty of them anyway, that is just the dream but I love flowers around. Those little English cottages with a mass of flowers would sound fine. But I know there is exactly the right place for me and it will unfold if I listen spiritually and there is no other way of really listening. If you or Mrs. Carr run across anything or think of any plan tell me. That Los Altos place was excellent in a way but it seems terribly lonesome in a sense. I do not know if it is still vacant but the right place is awaiting me I know whatever that may be. If you have any ideas, pass them along they may be of God.

The world doesn’t seem to be getting much peace and of course it cannot because the pressure of Truth is becoming more resistless all the time and every mortal must finally bow its head in submission until there is no mortality to submit which is really the fact right this instant. God Is and nothing else is and that means to one and all good is omnipresent and nothing else is even to the “wickedest” as Mrs. Eddy says. And that only means me, so I do not have to go far to correct it and have heaven at hand. One fact God and one negative that is ever merely proclaiming the positive animal magnetism. How exquisitively simple and mine. No sin disease or death over there to be destroyed merely a negative statement of the reality, divine Love waiting my acceptance in language I can understand called the negative. But which is really Love’s presence calling me forward to the glorious heaven ever with me, perfection.

You will be off to your San Diego pretty soon now. Have a good time communing with God and He will fill you with all you need to say and think.

My best to you as ever.

My dear Friends:-

Here I am back again in old San Jose. I stopped to see Mildred before going on down to Rolling Hills which I have just discovered was a very good thing I did, as Bob had taken home with him a friend from New York so the house was pretty full. I will go down later on. I was in a sense disappointed to hear from Bob that while he had passed all exams mental and physical, he was turned down at this time for eye defect that they say can be straightened out for next year. I wrote the boy that every obstacle in one’s path was just an opportunity to learn a valuable lesson and I knew he would find it so, if he would maintain God in his thinking as All-in all. To repeat even this lie to you is animal magnetism so see you straighten it out with yourself at once and excuse me for repeating the slightest lie.

I had a good trip back and arrived San Jose about two o’clock Tuesday morning, and surprised Miss Mildred, phoning her later on in the morning. It is very wonderful being one side of the country one hour and almost the next the other side but that is nothing to what is before us for Mind is instantaneous.

This little note is just to tell you two dear people how much I enjoyed my month (pretty nearly) with you in New York. You made it most pleasant for me and I feel I gained a great deal from that stay. It was very delightful seeing your “Farm”, as I believe you call it, and it is sufficient of a farm to satisfy you for the present at least. Unless one lives on the farm a very small bit of one is enough. You have a lovely spot for quiet and rest.

You have told Mary I am sure all about the Montreal meetings and that now all is set to go on and God is ever going on so things are moving. Keep them doing so by knowing God., that is the only way and it controls the minutest detail of daily life, for all life is the manifestation of the divine Life filling all space and as Mrs. Eddy says guiding every event of our careers.

California is as usual getting into Summer and yesterday was a pretty good attempt around 90 just to remind me of your City. Mildred and Dorothea are fine and enjoyed hearing about the meetings.

Now keep your gaze on God and since He is All you cannot keep it elsewhere and all of good is yours now and ever. My very best to you both. You are very dear friends. Again thank you so much for you sweet attention.

Thanks so much for yours of 12 enclosures most interesting which I am herewith returning. Also your copy of you letter to Primrose. Forget Wharton affair, they returned to Carmel after their visit to L.A. in 1954 and intended to go East and see New England. Dear J.E. J.:–

Thank you very much for so promptly sending me those McElvoy statements. They were very good but I hope you have not depleted your supply too much by letting me have them. These records will be sort of interesting to read a few years from now when Javelin is a great big holding company in a way. But I was very interested in your statement that Doyle told you he was going up to somewhere to get Julian under way. I hope he will stay with that for Julian is where I am looking to for our first dividends, because that German English contract has got to be supplied before the end of next year and that alone will make dividends for Javelin unless our people get spending too fast, if so they will probably hear from it next meeting. Keep dividends before Doyle’s thought all the time. It is dividends alone that will make the market price of the stock worth while and so go up.

I see that the papers sent directly from St. Johns to me at Rolling Hills cost sixty cents in postage alone. Then the dollar I left you couldn’t have paid properly all their expense so I am inclosing another dollar in this which will help take care of it. And thanks for the trouble you had about it.

I saw an advertisement of S.L. Garnet Co. Canadian Research Bureau on 20 Wall Street, New York of a full report about Javelin. I sent for it and if it is anything new I will tell you, but it probably is not. You are on to everything as it takes place and these other fellows come in on the tail end but I just thought I would see what was being put out.

It isn’t possible to get anything very satisfactory about PRONTO except that it is working steadily and as I saw sometime ago expected to take in between four and five millions net each year. But now the whole thing seems swallowed up in Canada Tinto as subsidiary of the big British Tinto. I have lost my interest in it, because when a small company gets swallowed up in a big one it always seems to me it is lost. That is why I want no swallowing up of Javelin by all these other companies but that is not likely if it keeps its own identity as Julian producing. Also of course Javelin is what you might call now the mother of them all, which of course puts it in a different category.

My best to you both.

Dear J. E. J.:–

Thank you for those clippings etc. which I returned right away after reading them. They are very interesting and it was nice of you to send them to me to read. That was a good article of Payson Todd’s of July 11th. He is strong on his next move being 53 to 64. I think he may be right but I would give it longer than does he. I suppose that may be that I am not so much interested in the market as in the steady growth through accomplishment of ore etc. Now the etc. taking in NALCO takes on a very big turn, for in all that property there is doubtless a bushel of varying metals of great value and I also see Todd includes some oil territory. I didn’t know before that Labrador had any oil discoveries yet.

If Doyle gives his attention to pushing Pickens to getting Julian into production as soon as possible it will in turn make the other companies push their properties also, and the sooner the ore is being produced the better pleased will Newfoundland be and Smallwood will be able to smile very benignantly on his supporters.

It will all come in good time and I am sure things are moving quite rapidly now and will during the next twelve months. If you hear of special progress I shall be glad to hear of it. That is what infinite Progress means and God as All-in-all means that very thing infinite progression. Every one acting in obedience to the one Mind with nothing obstructing in the least. Keep clearly before you God’s absolute Allness and therefore all that there is to what is called animal magnetism is the presence of God operating for the glory of God even though appearing in negative language. The language is of no moment but the knowing the source and purpose of the activity is all important and bars out any mistaken sense. Be clear on this so as to maintain the absolute Allness of God infinite good. This maintains the perfection of all business but if you leave animal magnetism as something other than of God you have a devil to meet all the time so WATCH, WATCH as Jesus said. Watch what? Whom you acknowledge as All-in-all.

Tomorrow I am expecting Willard Maxwell of Seattle. He is running down over night. He is a fine fellow. Also Mrs. Hanks is in S.F. and is coming down to visit Mildred for a couple of days.

As I am planning now, I expect to be in Los Angeles again about the 20th. of August, after Mildred returns from Alaska. She will drive me down and I may get settled to work at the Los Altos Hotel as I did before. I have to stay at work. 27010 is a little too inconvenient I feel. Bob is at home with a good job with the Telephone people travelling around at times as needed. I am so glad.

Dear J’s.:–

Well I am making another move. On the 20th. of August my what I call my office apartment address will be 405 the Los Altos Apartment Hotel, 4121 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles 5, California. I decided I must keep in what one might call the active work of Christian Science and not sit down and go to sleep. So at long distance I engaged this 405 since through the help of Mrs. Carr. It is on the fourth floor and Mrs. Carr says it couldn’t be improved. It gets a good West breeze and looks of course West which we all must do to the “Golden shore of Love and the peaceful sea of harmony” as Mrs. Eddy so gracefully states it. Mildred will drive me down when she and Dorothea return from Alaska and I have taken the suite from August 20th, and I fancy it will be permanent. Mrs. Carr says it has all been very nicely repainted and refurnished so it should be just what I wanted. I know anyway it will be as Mrs. Carr says it is, perfect. Let me say Mrs. Thelma Carr I have known several years and she has been secretary to our friend Josiah M. for a number of years and is a very genuine metaphysician. You may remember I had an apartment for an office at the Los Altos last year for a little while to sort of try it out but then decided I did not want that apartment. It was on the ground floor and too dark and lonesome but this is on the fourth floor and Mrs. Carr says to her it is just perfect. Anyway what divine Love supplies will be good enough for me. But that will be my address after the 20th. of August and I shall endeavour to find it a true haven of happiness dispensing the works of divine Love.

Mrs. Eddy says she established the cause of C.S. through healing and it is only through healing that it will go forward. So as the son of God we must do His work and that as you well know means finding Him as sole everything of the minutest thing in one’s daily life. I know you two do this and are reaping always the reward of so doing.

Your Billy G– is still firing away I see, as Jesus said they have their reward. That reward is like the repentant thief on Calvary, a peace that for the time satisfies them but in the end it must all be replaced with the peace that comes of the understanding there is no matter, no sin, disease, or death, because divine Love fills immensity and there is no room for ought but His glory.

Thank you for your snaps of Javelin. I feel things are moving along that line and I am so glad Doyle is thoroughly awake that to have the whole immense undertaking prosper and grow to first get Julian going is essential, and the rest will follow suit. It isn’t any need for words it is deeds that are required. God brings deeds to the front always.

I know you two are doing finely and enjoying your lovely hide-away. See divine Love as All-in-all to it and its joy will be everlasting and your joy will grow and multiply. My very best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Thank you for your letter of the 7th. and the clippings etc you kindly sent me continuing the World’s St. Lawrence write up which has been quite good. I am returning the last ones you sent. I returned the first two.

You are having a good time at your Farm and evidently getting it in good shape especially the pond for the rain you are promised both “early and latter rains”. That only means all the rains you need. Do not forget that rain is no different to a loaf or a fish and these you know Jesus proved as everpresent. There is nothing you can conceive of that is not everpresent.

Mildred and Dorothea are in Alaska and will be back on the 15th. and then on the 20th. she will land me back in 405 Los Altos Hotel where I expect to find it just as God always has everything for everyone. Do not have any concern about that my dear fellow because God has never failed me and never will I know.

Doyle is quite uncommunicative when he is on some mission and that is the wise way to be.

Dear Josiah C.M.:–

I do not believe and neither do you, that Mrs. Eddy ever believed in any ISM of any kind except the divine. That she intended the Monitor to reach all mankind goes without saying. To Mrs. Eddy there could be only one World neither national or international but just ONE. Mrs. Eddy knew how graciously to accept any intended gift and naturally one of Conciliation would be most pleasing for if Science stands for one thing above all else, it is oneness with all that means and is good.

Mrs. Eddy was dedicated to God and God alone and that took in All, for God is All-in-all. If Christian Scientists would join God completely and find Him as All-in-all that would cast out nothing but not joining anything, or how can you join what you already belong to in your all with God.

Your letter to your friend is to the point and good. Haven’t you mixed me up with somebody else! I do not remember Edward Kimball giving such a lecture but he doubtless did and he certainly roused Barrett from what would apparently have been death, but when, I know not; so far as his lecture you refer to goes, and what difference. You know T’aint so is all there is to any of it. The only dead you will ever raise is in the dead loafer right at home and he is only as Jesus said of Lazarus just sleeping away his time waiting some one to come and give him a good swift kick and tell him to have more sense than that, and not make a fool of himself as Mrs. Eddy did with the drunken man and what she said, she said aroused his dormant sense and he immediately ceased to make a fool of himself any longer and those looking on called him then sober. The whole thing never occurred. Man is never less than man.

Start from God and end with God and leave anatomy alone.

My best to you,
H.W.E.

Well you dear Old Soldier:-

I would like to throw my arms around you and give you our old Sergeants command to we boys gathered on the parade ground “head erect, shoulders well pressed back eyes to the front”. How often I still say that to myself and now know how true it has got to be with me if I am to hold the line and go steadily forward and that we all have to do for there is nothing else for us to do, but go forward ever forward.

I am writing this from San Jose but you will see the new address is 405 Los Altos Apartment Hotel, 4121 Wilshire Blvd. about eight blocks due West of The Gaylord. I have taken this apartment it is only ten miles from Rolling Hills so whenever I feel like it I can go over (or I have my room there of course always) and Mrs. Munro keeps the house going all the time with her sister Clara as housekeeper which makes it very nice for me. But I did not feel Rolling Hills was convenient for my keeping on seeing people and that I wish to do of course.

Well my dear Child you are in your old camping ground again I learned to-day from Lorraine and I am glad of that for I feel Lorraine’s atmosphere is easier for you then the household of more or less youngsters you had up North, but when all is said and done no person place or thing has much to do with any of us because we are lost as it were if God is not found as absolutely All-in-all. Unless the Christian Scientists can find God, divine Love as All-in-all and really meaning that, meaning that God is all the malicious mind there could ever be and in so doing find divine Love filling all space he is not handling animal magnetism but is thinking of it as something bad and to be destroyed. That is just giving lip service to God’s All-in-all.

What a wondrous statement All-in-all is. All to All to all life to all death to things present and things to come and that is what Divine Love is All to all. Thank God and all that ever seems to disappear is the erroneous sense of everything and that doesn’t even disappear because the true sense is right there all the time. We will talk it all over one of these days and in the meantime you are the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth. His well beloved Son and always has been. This is what we have always loved and always will love.

His arms are ever around you dear Child for you are His. My best to you.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Yours of the 15th in this mornings mail. Thanks for it. I like those aver-depois coming off. That is fine for you. What is the use of carrying around an extra lot of water etc. when you already have all the water there is “for the water I shall give you shall be in you a well of water springing up unto everlasting life”. That is water worth while. But never-the-less fine for you my boy. When you start something keep it up if it is of God, until you hear well done good and faithful servant thou shalt be made ruler over many things.

Javelin report sounds excellent. That is really all it can sound for divine Love embraces all there is to Javelin to bless all mankind.

Yes. You are quite right. Tuesday morning early Mildred and I will leave for Los Altos Hotel not “San Carlos” as you said in the note from you to-day. They got back from Alaska promptly on time and enjoyed their trip. After Mildred gets back from taking me she and Dorothea will go to their old stand-bye Gold Lake for ten days.

Isn’t that fine about the bus for Mary letting her have so much more time out at your lovely little hide away? That child is a terrific worker. She seems on the go every minute but there is one nice thing about it. It has lots of change all the time, persons, places and things.

With my best to you both.

Well I surely have been a rotter not to write until to-day, to thank you for that lovely plant that was awaiting me in my apartment in Los Angeles when we arrived here on the 20th., and as your letter said to Mildred, we were doubtless when you were writing having a lovely drive down. Yes, we did indeed and leaving San Jose at six fifteen A.M. arrived here at 4.15 P.M. Glad to get in. Both Mildred and I were delighted with the apartment, and we have been every minute since getting here, you might say unpacking, except that Tuesday morning we went out and picked up a bushel of things at Rolling Hills and I tell you it is some job to sort the mass of stuff I had again accumulated besides of course what I brought down from San Jose. But as my coloured friend said T’aint so. That ends it.

But that is the excuse I give for my apparent rudeness, not writing and thanking you so much for the fresh green lovely plant. That now adorns a very important place at the door. It was just too good of you both to do it but there is no stopping you I suppose. But I wouldn’t exchange it my dear boy for the world, as the saying is. It is exactly right just where it is and again my very best thank you both.

Also thanks for your letters. Javelin surely is promising many things, not the least what this lumber deal is going to produce. That is, simple in a way, cut it and take it as it were. I hope Doyle while on his trip managed to get some of those other European Countries to plan on putting up their own mills. That they need the ore there, goes without saying, but we want several to put up their own mills and pay Javelin royalties. But they are doing well and I shall look forward to seeing whatever report Doyle sends out but thanks to you we have the nucleus of it from you and thanks for sending it.

We have a lovely West wind that drives right through this apartment so we do not mind the weather. Mildred left a few minutes ago with her best to you both which is added to mine. Again many thanks. You are dear thoughtful people.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

Thanks very much for yours of the 29th with some interesting clips. I am returning the ones you asked to have returned. It is a good thing human belief is getting shocked at its increase of population etc. and what it is facing. Of course truly there is never an increase of any kind. Creation is a finished proposition for it is merely Creator expressed through impartation. It is not more people, for you are the one man of God and as such man your whole reality of being is expressed as divine Love’s impartation of Himself to you His only begotten son, but appearing to you as the infinity of person place and thing but that is only impartation or the Holy Ghost. Father is divine Love. Son is you His man and Holy Ghost is His eternal impartation of Himself in infinite unfoldment. Keep it simple always.

Your job is just one and that one job is to designate the infinity of negation not as evil but as animal magnetism as Mrs. Eddy terms it “hypnotism or animal magnetism as the specific term for error or mortal mind”. Then wrap animal magnetism in its every phase in divine Love and what is there left of evil. Nothing whatever.

This is your job destroy nothing, how could you? Then do not try but keep your God divine Love All-in-all always and you are free and well. Have only One God and one man and you have every problem solved.

Have a lovely trip and give my love to Mary and tell her I appreciate her clear vision.

My best to you both.
H.W.E.

P.S. Mildred and I do not think this is the only apartment on earth for me, but at this moment it is mighty convenient and handy. There is nothing elaborate about it but it fills my needs exactly and that is my need. It is small and compact and faces the West for the breeze, an all important. H.W.E.

Dear Miss —:–

That was very thoughtful of you to write me about your Mother. Yes she has gained a great deal from her experience because all that death accomplishes is to destroy the belief of death itself. Your mother will go forward from this point with more assurance than ever before for she knows now that death was just a bluff and had no power whatever to affect her in any way and could never touch Life. She is talking with God all the time and is finding you her child with Him always safe in his care.

If you come to the mainland I shall be very glad to see you and have a talk with you. I wonder if you know Miss Ruth —. Her home is 656 Prospect Street. She is a clear thinking Scientist. Call on her if you feel like it I am sure she would be glad to see you.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

This will welcome you back to New York again after I know your splendid trip. Mildred writes me you wrote her that sometime this Fall you and Mary are going to travel California ways. That will be very nice. If this part of California gets some rain before you come it should look lovely and green otherwise you can expect her normal brown after the Summer.

I see Javelin is preparing a very full 32 page booklet on the union of Javelin and NALCO and showing what a big proposition it really is with maps etc. It evidently is their big effort to show their stockholders what they have accomplished, at least in getting together a vast territory of valuable minerals. It will be most interesting I imagine and will be out, the report, said very soon so by the time you are back it will meet you probably.

There is nothing specially new from here except to tell you how nicely that lovely plant you sent me is doing. It implies by its actions that it likes the atmosphere here alright. A friend gave me a pot of African violets. I have never tried raising any but now I have to so I know they will do very well. Mrs. Blanche Palmer of 3802 Edinburgh St. Vancouver, Canada has been here several days, now on her way home and what do you think she told me about the Whartons, had just had a letter from him in Santa Cruz. Yes, he is married and all she knew was his wife apparently died suddenly in America and then he went to England and then returned here, and married his second wife. Mrs. Palmer said he was going to drive over from Santa Cruz and meet her train at Salinas and see her for a few minutes, on her way North. Of all people I hadn’t the slightest idea they knew one another but evidently they did. Mrs. Palmer I started out to tell you is a real metaphysician and thinks her way through. If you and Mary should be in B.C. call her up and say how do from me.

Mrs. Collar of Clearwater, Florida was here. If you go down that way she is another good thinker. If you should know Mrs. Eleanor Wilson’s address, not her Washington one, but where she is now, you will probably receive a letter from a Miss Pearl Squire in Washington asking for it. I told her you were one person I thought might know it.

This is enough for now. Do not forget, to not leave animal magnetism thrown over the wall and forgotten but to handle it means to pull it out with the old Dragon and wrap them in divine Love and so they are swallowed up in reality. This is the only way to do it.

My best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–
I got a letter from Mrs. Palmer of B.C. and she wrote me about her visit for fifteen minutes on the train steps with the Whartons who had gone over to Salinas to just meet here and have a little talk. She knew I wanted to know the facts about Mrs. Wharton so stayed with that and her statement is that they never left Carmel for the East as they planned but went over to Pacific Grove where Mrs. Wharton became very sick and after six months passed on. So she never went East at all. However he did and as you know came back and married his present wife. I must correct that statement. Mrs. Wharton became sick in Carmel before they were to start and then went over to Pacific Grove and she died there six months later. Thus endeth that chapter. A dream shadow just a dark image of mortal thought that instantly flees before the one Consciousness that IS and is All that is and that you know Is or you could not consciously be.

I do not know whether you are home yet but soon will be I expect doubtless. I just wanted to send you both my best and let you know about the Whartons C.E.D. H.W.E.

September 18th. 1957.

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

You have been very thoughtful to call me up and Mildred too to tell us about the gyrations of Javelin and what they offer in way of investment. There was a time when I would have reached out for opportunities like those, that have been offered, but that day is past I believe, for I feel God has given me all I need, then why try to have more especially as if I should say good bye, the government would step in and help itself bountifully and why should I give my thought to such a proposition.

Do not think by this that I do not appreciate very highly the value of the right sense of money, for I do, and I am glad to have whatever God gives me, but more than I can use can be a burden and when Javelin pays dividends on what it has already on hand in the way of contracts they will surely be enough to satisfy every demand. I want heaven, not earth, but I do not despise all the good of earth, in anyway. And I want one and all to have it to the full for it is all theirs, for what is God’s is man’s.

My deep prayer is how to understand divine Love more and make it so practical that it spontaneously heals all I come in contact with. Mrs. Eddy tells us we must raise the dead and that is a worthy goal. I do not mean by this bringing back the dead for they wouldn’t come back or I miss my guess, but raising the dead means too, dead in trespasses and sins and I must begin at home or it is no good. We need Divine Science not too much of Christian Science. Christian Science is only the bugle call to the true and higher realm of divine Science the “Eminence of Mind” where all argument etc. is swallowed up in realization of God’s absolute Allness.

I am expecting to return to Rolling Hills on Saturday morning. You know I have been having some day dreams of taking a trip to England and going down to Glastonbury and spending a month or two quietly staying there and sort of getting the feel of that wondrous spot where Jesus gained such peace and poise, for eighteen years in preparation for his marvelous career. I might if I want, not stay there at all. One never knows what God will unfold, but I do know that only divine Love can take me on any trip and whatever that trip, it will prove a spiritual blessing, if even as the Psalmist sang “if it goes into hell only thou are there”.
Infinite good is before us one and all and it will unfold harmoniously in proportion to where we start from spiritual sense or material sense.
Well I have had a little chat with you, thank you. My love to Mary and you too.

Dear Mrs. Shippy:-

Thank you for yours of the 23rd. Where the dickens--excuse the English, did you get any ability to be unhappy? Where is the source of any such thing. Handle animal magnetism not unhappiness. Base yourself on your one rock I consciously am, as such amness spontaneously Consciousness must first be, therefore you are the conscious identity of that infinite Consciousness that Is and is all that is because there is nothing outside of its infinity or it would be is not.

Stand on this and go back to it every time to assure yourself and reassure yourself of the only Source from which you derive your every thought divine Love for is not divine Love the All that can stand as Is. Tell that dear husband of yours to hold fast to this eternal truth and never to handle things but only animal magnetism.

You can only have one cause and that one bars out every thought of sin, disease or death. This you know stand right on it fearlessly.
My best to you all.

September 27th. 1957.

Dear Mrs. Gruman:-

Thank you for your letter of the 24th. I am glad you enjoyed the pamphlets I sent you. No they are not for sale. I had my publishers in Berkeley run me off at the time I sent them out several thousand copies but did not leave any of them with them. They of course have my books for sale, but the pamphlets I just kept to give away myself. Please tell your friend Mrs. Habel what I have written you. I will send her ten copies of each, that she can give away herself.

No, you were quite right the GOD (word unclear) OF DOMINION is not mine and I do not know the pamphlet or who wrote it. Neither do I know who wrote BODY—EMBODIMENT OF IDEAS. But you are quite right it may have paragraphs from my book I have found such things in books issued by others. I pay no attention because if it is true what is said it has its own place and divine Love maintains it in that place.

If you should come out to California be sure and look me up as I should enjoy giving you some important points in regard to Mrs. Eddy’s very strong statements on the reason we are not healing cases. She says “Because you do not understand how to handle animal magnetism.” That is the one and only claim you ever have to because as S. & H. declares “Hypnotism or animal magnetism is the specific term for error or mortal mind.” In other words Mrs. Eddy gives animal magnetism as the specific term for all evil then that is what has to be handled. It is too big to write about but sometime you may be out here and we will thrash it all over.

Every good wish to you.
H.W.E.

September 29th. 1957.

Dear Mrs. Miller:-

This has been a long time answering your letter of last April 16th. But I have been travelling all over the place, New Zealand, New York etc. etc. So please excuse my negligence.

Yes Hugh Kennedy went through class with me and his book C.S. and O. RELIGION has always seemed to me a very fair statement as he saw it of the Boston trial. But my dear child do not make too much of any of these little discrepancies. They are not worth it. Only one thing is worth attention and that is your demonstration of your understanding of C. S. in healing quickly every case that presents to you.
Read that article in C.C.T. and I think you will never again think that Mrs. Eddy could ever plagiarize from anyone. We may perhaps if we don’t know better but never Mrs. Eddy.

Come out to California sometime this winter and I shall enjoy thrashing anything you like over with you. And also enjoy talking with you. The one insistent need as Mrs. Eddy pointed out to handle animal magnetism as the one claim confronting you. She does not say destroy animal magnetism but handle it. There is a great difference.

Every good wish.

Mr. Adrian J. —,

Los Angeles, California.

Dear Mr.—:–

I was very grieved to hear that my friend, Your brother, Lew has while I was away, said good bye for the moment to us. I am never sorry for the one who has gone apparently for I know the experience has opened his eyes to a grander and more glorious sense of being than that one had here. What he knew of Christian Science, as it were largely theoretically, became to him an actual reality and he would not return to this feeble sense of life under any circumstances. But it is of course different with those left behind. But it is grand to know how wonderfully he is blessed himself and whatever it was that held him to matter beliefs has been displaced with the Allness and everpresence of divine Love filling immensity.

I have just come down here and am at a very comfortable apartment at the Los Altos Hotel. It will be far more comfortable for my work than my dear little place in Rolling Hills but which was a little out of the way and also a little small for my purpose.
Some time when you are out this way I should like very much to have a good chat with you any evening or during the day whichever suits you best. My telephone is the Hotel number Dunkirk 7-1181.

With very good wish.
H.W.E.

(To The JEJs handwritten in the left corner)

October 20th, 1957.

You are both dear and I am so glad to hear from underground wires that you expect to be in California around the 7th. of November. Time is surely flying but why shouldn’t it. It has no purpose but to keep going on bringing its glorious sunshine and its lovely Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall with their wondrous changes of beauty and utility.

Los Angeles is very beautiful now. I have I think, I told you before, a splendid (?)00 by 200 foot home office of the Tidewater Oil Company going up right on the corner of the next street West so that I am having a college course in construction from every outside window and I find very much in its construction to interest me. It is only going to be six story above ground and three under but quite a fine building I am sure.

By the time you get here it will have taken form so that you can get its whole idea. I have glasses so I can watch it quite closely. Human belief is getting quite free in what it undertakes. I notice whenever they want a tractor for any purpose on the top floor they just swing it up from the ground as though it had no weight. And that of course as so-called thought gets in to space high enough nothing weighs nothing and to hold it anywhere it would have to be fastened down.

You sent me sometime ago a copy of your letter to Miss Squires and asked me to return it which I immediately put it in an envelope to you but I do not remember anything further about it. You also sent me a lot of clippings etc. which you did not want returning. I shouldn’t be concerned about Miss Squires I do not consider it a reliable point of view. I see you recognize that also.

Well we will soon enjoy another chat. Keep thought absolutely clear that you are in the realization era and have therefore just one thing to handle under every circumstance and that is animal magnetism and handling that means seeing divine Love as enfolding within its ample protection all there is to animal magnetism. And that heals any claim of any kind or nature.
Have a lovely trip and my best to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace

Mildred last trip brought me down a book that she said you sent me. 1830-60. If you did thank you very much. It’s most interesting like your Johnston book. Was this one to bring out about Majors? It shows he was some transportation boy. What an undertaking it was the settling of this vast country. People have no idea of what it all meant. It gave, too, splendid account of Brigham Young and his Mormon migration. That was a big undertaking. Under the guise of religion what cannot be done. H.W.E.

October 22nd, 1957.
Mr. Thomas B.—,
2232 Northwest Everett Street,
Portland, Oregon.

Dear Mr. —:–

Your very interesting and appreciative letter of the 14th came in this morning and I have immediately sent your address etc. to my Publishers Lederer, Street and Zeus Co. of Berkeley Calif. To send you at once a copy of the one Volume and you send them your cheque for six dollars which is the price of the book.
I am inclosing you a couple of leaflets that I think you will enjoy. Your experience of yourself and family in Christian Science is very interesting and if you are ever in Los Angeles I shall be very happy to meet you and have a good chat. You are quite right these are wonderful days we are in and they will continue to become more wonderful. We are in the realization era and are facing as it were the last days in other words our battle to-day is with the dragon not the beast or the false prophets but pure realization. This is where Mrs. Eddy began. You know her discovery was divine Science and she worked out Christian Science for us because there is no language for divine Science. Her discovery was the absolute Allness of God infinite good and her gift to mankind she named Christian Science for she had to discover and make her own language for to God’s Allness there is no language it is pure realization. That is where you are to-day and as Mrs. Eddy told us every claim to-day is animal magnetism. It is never a thing, place or person and it is animal magnetism that has to be translated back to divine Love to heal the ills of mankind.

There is no reason for your withdrawing from either The Mother church or a branch church that I know of. Do so if you wish but what is there to be gained by it nothing whatever that I can see. Church and man are synonymous terms, the idea of God. You cannot be less than man can you. All those doings are really minor and need not concern you one bit. Handle animal magnetism by finding divine Love as embracing all that you mean by animal magnetism then when lost in “the eminence of that” realization there is no evil to eliminate and well is and is all that is. However whatever you do do not fall for the rottenness of mentally malpractising on the Church of Christ Scientist by accepting or repeating the lie that the Church of Christ Scientist could ever be less than crowded.

Watch Jesus said.

My every good wish to you.
H.W.E.

November 4th. 1957.
Mrs. Corinne Battagliola,
1129 Laurel Street,
Santa Cruz, California.

Dear Mrs. Battagliola:-

I was sorry to not hear you clearly on the phone when you called but as you say perhaps it was just as well for you wrote what you wanted to say. I do not like the phone to talk over private affairs. It is not the place to do it. No, I was not listening through the wrong end of the ear piece; tell your operator I have been too long a telephone user for that.

As a metaphysician Mrs. Battagliola you know as Mrs. Eddy has so carefully and so often pointed out the only claim you ever have to meet is animal magnetism the specific term as she says for mortal mind. She further has said several times that we fail to heal our cases because we do not understand how to handle animal magnetism. Then surely what you first need to do is not to talk and think about nerves and such things but begin by seeing every claim from a scratch as it were on the finger to an earthquake as animal magnetism and only that. How you could you be conscious of anything unless it first registered with you as a sense of consciousness. Then can you handle a scratch as a sense of consciousness or a thing? Decide these points yourself and then get busy and see it all as a claim of animal magnetism and then clothe animal magnetism in the garments of divine Love and be lost in the eminence of that Love filling all space and the scratch or earthquake will not be found.

You know this then do it and do not allow yourself for one moment to be led astray and handle things when All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation for divine Love is All-in-all and fills immensity.

Think this all over and write me if you wish or come down and we will have a good talk.

My best to you.
H.W.E.

September 6th, 1957.

Dear Mrs. Bryan:-

Thank you for your letter of the 4th. Of course you have a perfect right as a Christian Scientist or anyone else to attend the church of your choosing or to not attend any church. What we all do need to listen to is the voice of divine Love but that voice fortunately does not need any edifice to be heard in. It does need as the Bible puts it a humble and a contrite heart to hear what He says and that you have.

I was glad you are closely sticking to S. & H. and C.C.T. the school room book as I always call it because they will carry anyone through any and every experience into the sure haven of happiness and contentment. The question of marriage is based as you know fundamentally on the belief of incompleteness, here is man and here is woman apparently two but God only has one man-woman even as God is Father-Mother not two but one. You remember the Bible says and He called their name Adam not Adam and Eve. Think of yourself from this standpoint then you will find a perfect peace and satisfaction in being just as you are. Study all of Mrs. Eddy’s writings on this subject and I know you will find harmony but do not try to find either a man or a woman. Consider carefully how you started your metaphysical thinking. You began absolutely alone with yourself I consciously am and from that you induced not deduced that Consciousness must first be or you could not consciously be. But to start you had to begin with yourself alone not another thing and as Mrs. Eddy puts it so well “The Christian Scientist is alone with his one being and the reality of things”. You are dealing with God, divine Love always and it is from divine Love you have your entire being. Remember this and as the Bible says “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path”.

Try this insistently and you will find it works. I am going to give you the address of a very earnest Scientist in Clearwater Florida, her home is Mrs. Grace Collar, 1324 Palmetto Drive. If you are down that way be sure and see her and have a good chat.

In your music work, declare that there is a constant demand for all you have to give, that is the law of God, there can neither be a demand or a supply of anything without both qualities of Mind being instantly present. Insist on this and you will have no fear whatever of lack of pupils. You are in the pure realm of Mind every instant. This is not the era of matter or of mental argument but this is the final era of pure realization. Stay with this and find divine Love as embracing all in its tender care. You are not outside of this all embracing divine Love. Trust it and thank God that you know what you know of infinite Truth. Our hearts need to be full of thankfulness all the time then as Mrs. Eddy so beautifully puts it, “When thought is lost in the eminence of Mind the healing takes place”.

Get into that eminence of Mind that allness, that completeness of Mind and stay there and you will find your heart rejoicing.

Every good wish.
Herbert W. Eustace

Dear Mr. —:

Thank you for your letter of the 4th. No, I have not written any more leaflets since CALL NO MAN YOUR FATHER. I feel Mrs. Eddy has given us all the last word when she said “Call disease animal magnetism and then handle animal magnetism.

Ask yourself what did she mean by handle animal magnetism? That is what you have to decide and then do it for animal magnetism is the one and only name to-day for error no matter what it may be called.

To handle animal magnetism means in plain language to realize that divine Love is all that there ever is to animal magnetism and you must so clothe animal magnetism in the garments of divine Love that it fills immensity and in the very presence all that you ever called evil vanishes for you have clothed in the Wedding Garments of perfection and there is nothing left to destroy and never was.

H.W.E.

Thursday November 14th, 1957.

Dear Mrs. —:

I just got a letter from Mildred my niece telling me of the passing on of our dear friend, your husband. You know Mrs. — whenever I hear of some friend passing on my first thought is always one of “Joy for thee happy friend, Thy bark is passed the dangerous sea, And safely moored at last beyond the rough foam”. I never have a sense of sorrow for the one that has gone but my heart does go out in tenderest sympathy to those he has left and I know God the one Divine Love is tenderly caring for you in this hour of seeming aloneness. Your husband my dear Child, is as really as near to you to-day as he was when you felt him by your side for hereafter is not off somewhere in the distant future but it is right at hand and with you here and now.

Try to realize this and feel how your husband has awakened to a much larger and grander sense of life than he ever could experience here and as a wonderful Writer once wrote “He awaits to welcome you where no arrow wounds the eagle soaring, where no partings are for love, where the high and holy call you to meet again”.

Nothing separates true love. Every good wish to you.

Dear Joseph E. J.:

Thank you for Beasley’s book which I have glanced through and find, he like all his tribe, under the aegis of ecclesiasticism, lie with the most utter contempt for truth as I see he did, for my eye caught his repetition of in substance for what you tried to correct your friend in his book, and wrote that excellent letter to the trustee on the whole subject of the printing of Mrs. Eddy’s books by the Pub. House. If you have a spare copy of that letter it might help Beasley, but may be it is not worth the trouble, for when Ephraim is joined to his idols the best and only way is to leave him alone, and as Mrs. Eddy says, so strongly, “Never to take offence at a wound by anyone. Always leave it to God who will avenge and heal. He will reward rightly, you cannot.” This is the wisdom of God we never lose by following it.

Things here are moving along steadily. I am going ahead with the glass Solarium going out of our living room, but it is slow getting the papers, and you cannot move without this license and that. I am keeping my room or apartment at the Los Altos Hotel for the time being and seeing people here, when I am here, and will continue to do so for a little while longer until perhaps we get the Solarium finished. It will be a room about 27 feet by fifteen feet and should make a lovely place for Mrs. Munro to enjoy with all kinds of plants to brighten it for she is so fond of plants. We are planning to heat it by electricity because the gas in the house seems to play havoc with the plants all over the house so we decided better not risk anymore with gas. The Solarium or glass room as I call it will give us a splendid view at night of San Pedro and its pretty lights and the ocean beyond.

I am looking forward to receiving those various articles or whatever they are on Canadian Javelin. Its development is quite interesting and its future is quite amazing or fantastic as Todd calls it. I am interested to see just how quickly the financial mind, so-called, takes to catch on to what a wonderful store house of minerals Labrador has for its use, only awaiting their vigorous development. I think one of the most amazing things of the Labrador unfoldment was the putting in of that two hundred and fifty millions of money into building a mere 350 odd miles of railroad to carry out the ore and putting in all that money to enable Canadian Javelin to put in a paltry twenty millions more to build their connecting line and give Can Jav. the full privilege of their immense outlay.

That is not often the case and apparently according to that Post story it is magnificently built as it should be to last to haul out all the useful ore etc. Labrador has stored up for mankind’s use. It is quite interesting and I hope next summer to see it eye to eye. If it turns out that way I will D.V.

My best to you both.

Tuesday evening November the 19th. 1957

Dear Catherine:-

I was so glad to get your note to-day for after seeing you in Los Angeles just after we had arrived I thought you were going to let me have your address but not receiving it until to-day I have not been able to write you but now I will send you a little line.

Whatever experience you are having my dear child remember it can only be of good for God is All-in-all and that debars all except good from ever even appearing to you. Watch our thought on this because it is evil alone that would tempt you to think that there is some power operating as your Mind that could bring you an experience that was not helpful and of divine Love. God is All, insist on this in season and out of season. Let nothing else abide with you as mind but this one divine Love filling all space and leaving no room for ought but itself.

Only God infinite good governs one single one of your steps so do not allow mesmerism to warp your thought in the least by the suggestion that some person has had something to do with your affairs. Only good has governed them one and all. Much love Catherine.

20 December 1957

Dear Friend of the “C. C. T.”:

In accord with Mrs. Eddy’s letter to Mr. Eustace in December 1905 (My. 197, Sentinel Vol. 8, pages 265-266), Mr. Eustace finished his work and gave us his goodbye the evening of the 9th of December, leaving his one Volume, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE, “ITS CLEAR, CORRECT TEACHING” And Complete Writings, as his now permanent meeting and communing place with his friends.

Mr. Eustace has provided for a Trusteeship of seven Trustees, for the ownership, further publication, and continuing distribution, of his “C. C. T.” one Volume; and the additional pamphlets available until eventually they are included in the one Volume. Letters and orders addressed to the Printer, Lederer, Street and Zeus, will receive proper disposition.

In her “practice” handbook to SCIENCE AND HEALTH, Miscellany, Mrs. Eddy titles its Chapter III, Personality (116-120). Its two articles of but five pages both came in the last years of her Founding. The second one is to a Clergyman who deeply desired to see her. Near the close of her reply to him, Mrs. Eddy says: “We look for the sainted Revelator in his writings, and there we find him. Those who look for me in person, or elsewhere than in my writings, lose me instead of find me. I hope and trust that you and I may meet in truth and know each other there, and know as we are known of God.” (My. 120)

A recent statement by Mr. Eustace on the practice of Christian Science seems almost an epitomy of what he has been pouring out on his steady stream of callers in the three months since he made himself fully available in his Los Altos Apartment; and is most timely and fitting to accompany this announcement of his personal goodbye, thus leaving his one Volume free and unfettered for its impersonal work and destiny in support of the “Clear, Correct Teaching” of SCIENCE AND HEALTH. This statement is enclosed with this letter.

We know Mr. Eustace would want us to say for him at this Season, the deep joy of Christmas and Happy New Year to you, in the wholly spiritual bond of the “clear, correct teaching of Christian Science”. (My. 297)

A recent statement on the practice of Christian Science by Herbert Willoughby Eustace, C. S. B.:

“I am so glad to know you are finding C.C.T. exactly what it of course truly is, the school room book of SCIENCE AND HEALTH and as such as is the schoolroom book of anything, brings home to its student what the text-book being considered is bringing out at every line, the absolute allness of divine Love.

“As the Christian Scientist you stand alone with the one Divine Consciousness that is, and is All that is and you find yourself the conscious activity of this Consciousness that Is and as such conscious identity expressing all that divine Love is. Then all that you ever know comes only from this one divine Mind filling all space and operating as the Source from whence you receive every impartation each moment. Realize this, then divine Love will be your only thought and spontaneously you will find yourself expressing this divine Love. The False Prophet brings out strongly that as Mrs. Eddy drives home the fact, animal magnetism is the one and only claim of evil and to understand how to handle animal magnetism is the way to heal all error.

“Now what does she mean by this? Isn’t it that animal magnetism must be seen as the negation of divine Love and as such in order to be understood properly it must not be attempted to destroy it, only be so as it were wrapping it up in the All of divine Love, that you are lost in the eminence as Mrs. Eddy says of “Divine Mind” where in such eminence the raiments of righteousness are seen as the only covering of one and all whether called devil or evil of any kind. As the Psalmist said “If I go into hell behold Thou art there.” Your God is All-in-all and that is alone what handles animal magnetism transforming it not destroying anything.

“As you do this you will not be bothered with wanting so-called Class instruction for this one divine Love that fills immensity takes care of all that needs caring for.

“Do not try to destroy anything. In your all of God divine Love how can there be anything to destroy, then translate it back to God and so as the Psalmist, find that if he made his bed in hell behold God is there. In fact there is no place where God is not. You have proved this over and over and over again and now you go one step higher and prove that divine Love must embrace in its filling of all space all that is meant by or rather should be meant by animal magnetism. Remember you are in the Universe of perfection and all that you ever know is what comes directly to you from the one infinite Consciousness that you in being the consciously am are the conscious identity of. Make this your very own until you truly feel lost in the eminence of divine Love and whatever is contrary to Love will vanish like a dream.

“I have not held any classes since 1941 and what is the need, when we have all of Mrs. Eddy’s writings and also the school-room book of SCIENCE AND HEALTH, C.C.T. Clear, Correct Teaching. Use these and you will ask for no more.”

The whole of THE FALSE PROPHET in the C.C.T. may be said to be the epitome in highest statement of Mr. and Mrs. Eustace’s work of the half-century and more in behalf of the “Clear, Correct Teaching”.

Eyewitness Report of Mr. Herbert Eustace’s Lecture
AN ADDRESS ON PURE MIND

From the human aspect, the speaker was a tall, stately man, only slightly stooped for one past 90 years. His chief characteristic was that of strength, a great inner strength of spiritual knowledge which overshadowed all thought of age. I was not impressed by any sign of wrinkles but of a fair, smooth skin, nor of grey hair. My recollection, looking back only one hour, is that he had ample color in his hair. His eyes were bright and his countenance intelligent. His voice loud and clear, his diction and enunciation perfect. He is six feet or more tall and his step firm and unhesitating. There was a slight shaking of the hand and a very slight shaking of the head, but only at first. This was quickly eliminated as he began his address and his gestures and actions were those of a man half his age. His delivery was forceful and his purpose sure. He sat in the center of the stage for his address, which lasted two hours. His suit was grey. His smile quick and his humor instantaneous. He very apparently had an inner joy and strength and sureness both of himself and of what he intended to say.
His memory of dates, events and many quotations and recollections of Mrs. Eddy was letter perfect and without hesitation, yet given with the freshness and spontaneity of an original statement of fact.

Obviously the speaker was a clear spiritual thinker and of this there can be no doubt from his manner of delivery or his inspiring grasp of spiritual truths. Yet he made it plain that no one can give another spiritual truths, except to take the other back to the original source, God. There is no student, no patient, no teacher, nothing but God and Man, with nothing in between.

He emphasized that the terms student, patient, teacher, were abominations—implying “under”, the student or patient being “under” the teacher or practitioner, or something being higher up than you, or between you and God, or God and His idea.

The auditorium was filled to capacity with the exception of a few seats up front, perhaps four or five, which had been held for those hard of hearing. The doors closed promptly at 2 P.M. I did not look around or do not know if there were any turned away, or if any were standing. I did not try to estimate the crowd, but would guess there were around two hundred and fifty, perhaps more. It was not a large auditorium and was open only to his students and a few others, but not to the public. It was a memorable and uplifting occasion and packed with vital warnings and recommendations for the preservation and progress of Christian Science.

THE ADDRESS

Here is the difficult thing to state in a few words without making trite, matter-of-fact comments, the spiritual inspiration which was imparted to us.
To try to state the purpose of the address in one brief statement I suppose it can be said it was to show that Christian Science is not here to put us to sleep, but to awaken us, to show us how to translate all things back to Mind, God, and to open our eyes to animal magnetism, malicious mind, hypnotic suggestion—and show us how to handle it.

His address was really in two parts; first to show that the mission of Jesus was to destroy matter. He proved there is “no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter”. He was met on all sides with the argument “all is matter”, and he destroyed every last vestige of the claim. He left not a single thing undestroyed. He completely annihilated matter, overcame every material law and left absolutely nothing to be done in the complete destruction of the belief of matter. He stated: “It is finished”. There has been no matter-belief for 1900 years. Matter is no longer the claim to be overcome. It is no longer the problem and has no bearing on Christian Science practice. Christian Science has absolutely nothing to do with matter.
Jesus continued to advance in understanding and 60 years after the crucifixion saw the advent of Christian Science—the “little book”, which he revealed to John and which John recorded in his Revelation.

The Christian era was the sense era, the destruction of the claim of the five physical senses. The Christian Science era has nothing to do with this. The sense era was finished by Jesus. The Christian Science era is the Mind era—“All is Mind.”

Mrs. Eddy must have been on a very high plain of revelation when you consider it was 60 years after the ascension before Jesus reached the point where he saw the revelation of the Christian Science era. Mrs. Eddy’s revelation was that “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All in all.” This revelation is beyond and above the matter revelation.

The Scientific Statement of Being—“There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation”, starts with the denial of matter simply as a reminder, as if to say: “Now of course you remember that matter has been destroyed,–now you know that All is Mind”, etc.
While Jesus was met on every side with the argument “all is matter”, Mrs. Eddy was met with malicious mind,–“All is mortal, malicious mind,” and she destroyed every vestige of this claim.

Just as Jesus willingly gave his life to prove that however dead they tried to make his body, even hanging it up for all to see that it was as dead as they could make it, he proved there was no life in the material body and that it could not be killed. So Mrs. Eddy willingly gave her life, the human sense of life, to prove that malicious mind had no power. She did not have to die. She recorded with Mrs. Sargent and Mr. Fry and others that it was not old age or any belief of malicious mind that could harm her—or rather that it was not matter that had anything to do with her death. Five days before her passing she dictated this statement to Mrs. Sargent and then signed it:

“It took a combination of sinners that was fast to harm me.”
M.B.E. Nov. 28, 1910 (to Laura Sargent)

But Mrs. Eddy, as God’s gift to this age, as the revelation of the Allness of Mind, is still here, unharmed. She never died, but lives in Science and Health. Just as Jesus, the Christ idea, still lives. Science and Health is still with us. Mrs. Eddy still lives.

Her charge to Calvin Fry was: “tell my followers this is not a normal claim of old age, etc., but a claim of malicious mental malpractice.”
The address was in two parts: matter and mind. The speaker pointed out that Jesus destroyed every vestige of the matter belief and proved “there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter.” This was his mission. With this truth the early Christians, and the early Christian Scientists, were able to perform many instantaneous cures. They know there was only one perfect creation, that health is the eternal fact,–and knowing this is a healing truth. But this alone is no longer sufficient.

The second part of the address was to show that now we have to fill the vacancy left by the annihilation of the matter belief. You prove there is no matter. Then what? You have to fill the vacancy with the allness of Mind. You have to prove that all is Mind. This is the job now.

The speaker stated that not just Christian Scientists but all others, doctors and healers of all descriptions, even patent medicines can heal and get bushels of testimonials because of the fact that “health is the eternal fact”—because God’s leg is the only perfect leg and cannot be broken, man’s leg cannot be broken, hence heals. But this is only a first step and Christian Scientists must take the next step. This they are failing to do. They refuse to leave the first stage of progress.

He likened it to a dog and a bone. We have been thrown a bone “there is no matter”, and it worked fine in the beginning, and we took the bone and ran with it, and hid it, and keep it, and have been chewing on it ever since and won’t let go.
We acknowledge Mrs. Eddy as the discoverer of Christian Science, yet we speak of her as discoverer in the same sense as we speak of Edison—interpreting everything as material progress, in the same sense as material advancement, and we continue to build up matter all the time, more houses, more churches, more material inventions, more of everything material.

Science and Health was a direct revelation of God. It gives us every truth we need to know to understand that All is Mind, and spirit is the only substance. But Science and Health does not give every detail of animal magnetism or malicious mental malpractice, nor of hypnotic suggestion. It does not do this for the reason that it would be unwise to reveal all battle plans to the enemy.

In class instruction Mrs. Eddy stated and Mr. Kimball stressed that—

“The only purpose of class instruction is to understand malicious animal magnetism, etc.” And the speaker recalled that was all Mr. Kimball taught them in class—specifically how to understand and deal with hypnotic suggestion, etc.

Mrs. Eddy spent 40 years trying to get us to quit running “with the bone”—to put aside “there is no matter” and handle malicious mental malpractice.
This is the problem today, the opportunity, the necessity. To be awake to hypnotic suggestion and to destroy it—mentally.

If you have scratched your finger you run for a rag to catch the blood. You treat a scratched finger. But the ONLY claim is hypnotic suggestion. You never should deal and you really are never dealing with matter, but with malicious mind.

As there is one divine Mind, there is one claim of malicious mind. We have to take malicious mind – pure malicious mind, back to God (uncontaminated with matter). We get rid of pure malicious mind by purifying it.

The claim is always malicious mind. We have not had to deal with matter for 1900 years. Since the ascension of Jesus there has been NOTHING BUT MALICIOUS MIND to deal with. Regardless of what you may believe, this is the fact.

As an aside, he spoke of the pamphlet the “Psychologist and the Magician”. He pointed out the care with which the professor examined the cave BEFORE the test, and how he slept in front of the entrance to be sure it remained pure and unmolested during the night before he entered for the test. His knowledge of the condition of the cave WAS THE ONLY CHRIST TRUTH HE KNEW, and this Truth saved him. He knew the condition of the cave. So, when every suggestion of danger came, the beliefs of serpents, tigers, crevasses, walls, fires, etc., he WENT BACK TO THE TRUTH he knew and this dispelled the false belief. Then when he examined the place where the dangerous manifestations seemed to have been, there was no sign or evidence of any kind left. The false belief, the hypnotic suggestion, had been completely annihilated. The truth had saved him, the Christ truth, his knowledge of the cave,–of reality.

Another example given by the speaker was that of Judge Medina, who recently tried the communists in New York City and who gave a most outstanding example of judicial integrity and poise. During the entire trial every trick was tried to destroy the calm dignity and judgment of the Judge, but he retained a correct attitude throughout. A short time ago, before the American Bar Association, meeting in Tennessee, Judge Medina told the members that during the trial the communists tried by every means to make him commit suicide, by suggestion.

Telephone calls, telegrams, letters, notes, placards, picket lines, and other means were used to suggest “jump, jump, jump” – One suggestion: “Medina will fall like Forrestal” (Forrestal jumped from a hospital window, a suicide, suggesting the same treatment was given him with more successful results.)
Judge Medina states the suggestion almost succeeded.

The speaker quoted Mrs. Eddy’s statement (Mis. 177:8): “Large numbers, in desperate malice, are engaged day and night in organizing action against us.” “Their feeling and purpose are deadly, and they have sworn enmity against the lives of our standard bearers.”
It was pointed out that WE are the standard bearers. We are the ones they would tear down. We must AWAKE to what is going on, and not be lulled to sleep. THERE CAN BE NO PEACE WITH EVIL. Christian Scientists have no right to be at peace with evil, with animal magnetism, hypnotic suggestion, etc. “Doff the lavender kid zeal, etc.”

Mrs. Eddy gave her life as the final evidence,–because she had “finished” her work, there was nothing left undone. It was complete. This was her final lesson to us. For 40 years she had tried to take “the bone” away from us—the matter bone, and to awaken us to the claim of malicious mind. Today we must have ALL of Christ—pure Mind.

Jesus was the only one phase—the personal sense presentation of God (?) Think of him as the idea of God, not person.
Illustration: Jesus’ parable of the Wedding Feast. Some of the guests came without proper wedding garments and were ejected. They got in but were thrown out. They lacked the garment of pure Mind. We must be clothed in our right Mind. We can take no contaminated matter into the presence of God, at the wedding feast—no mind contaminated with matter belief.

Today we cannot even get into the wedding feast without a garment. Can’t even get in to be thrown out. We cannot take in a single vestige of the matter belief.
You are the practitioner. You are the one who has to demonstrate it. Mrs. Eddy says: “Be a law unto yourselves, that mental malpractice cannot harm you.” What are you going to do about it? Are YOU holding crime in check? If not, IT WILL HANDLE YOU.

All day long we are subject to subtle suggestions, hypnotic suggestions of malicious mind—in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, etc., always “building up” matter. But it is always malicious mind.

The speaker started the address with: “Mrs. Eddy said the original sum-total of evil is ingratitude. The remedy, gratitude, the highest human quality.” This may not be word for word, but is substantially correct.

Jesus Christ said: “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me”. He did not mean people, but that “if I be lifted up, I will draw all unto me”-lifted up in consciousness he would spontaneously find all others already there, already perfect in ONENESS.

It was stressed that there is ONLY ONE HEARER, one listener. Mrs. Eddy was a listener. We are listeners. Our job is to LISTEN. How many listeners are there?

ONE. I am that one. You are that one. There is only one listener.

You are the only man. There is only one Man. Only One God, One Idea.

He quoted Paul: “If any man think he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know” (I Cor 8:2). You must be willing to be told over and over,–you must tell yourself over and over: God is the originator, he imparts everything to man. Keep your place as listener.

When Jesus said: “I give you a new commandment,” the disciples were all ears. They expected some new great truth. Yet they were told “Love one another”, which undoubtedly they had been told many times before. If you think you know anything, you still have much to learn.

God is responsible for the mission of those whom he anoints. He ahs anointed YOU. He is responsible for you. He guides you. Listen. Those who trust in him, take His hand.

QUESTION: Is there anything in all the world you actually know of yourself?

ANSWER: ONLY that you consciously are.
Whatever you may know of sense testimony is given you. It is handed you. Human existence is sense existence, hypnotic suggestion. You do not know it of yourself.

You can say “Yes, I AM”, “I consciously AM”. Not: “I am conscious” Conscious of what? Rather say: “I consciously am”.
This is your state of awareness. You do not “find” yourself. You are not standing off somewhere looking at yourself. You are aware—you “consciously are”. This is what is meant by “Ye are the light of the world”, the light that lighteth every man, etc. “I consciously am”—your awareness.

QUESTION: Where do we go from here? Do we not have to accept the fact that because “we consciously are” that consciousness is? In other words, we must accept that this is the effect of a cause. There must be a primary a source of our awareness. Therefore we prove that God, Mind, IS, and is primary, and WE are the effect.

Mrs. Eddy, Jesus Christ, the Bible,–these didn’t give us Christian Science. Science and Health takes you to the source, to its source. Mind is the basis that establishes the whole of Christian Science. “Mrs. Eddy was the revelation of divine Mind.” – Jesus was the revelation to Mary that God is the Father of Man. Mrs. Eddy is the revelation that Mind is the Mother and Father of Man.

Death or nothing else will advance you until you take each and every step. There is no royal road. “You can die if you want to,–but you won’t get anywhere.”
There is nothing but IS—no outside of IS. IS is all of it. All that is. All is infinite, all is ONE. ALL IS.

Take every word back to God, the one common denominator, –this leaves YOU as the One Man. Consciousness can’t be ONE and have more than One Idea.

You are that man.

How does everything come to you? What about all these other people? You say, but I’ve a wife, and children, etc., but do they not all come to you as consciousness? And do you not take that registering of consciousness as “hand”, “wife”, etc. All you are conscious of is an impartation of God to you. YOU call them persons, places, things. It is God appearing to you as person, place, thing,–regardless of the appearance to you. It is consciousness.
Otherwise you could not possibly have dominion.

Christian Science does not come to lull you to sleep, but to WAKE YOU UP.

How many Christian Scientists are there? ONE. Who is that one? YOU. How many practitioners? One. YOU. One God. One Man. YOU.
Adam and Eve? They are YOU. As also are Abraham, Moses, Jesus, etc. Of course they are you. They come as consciousness to you. YOU are the whole thing.
In Pulpit and Press (4:7) Mrs. Eddy asks: “Is not man mathematically and metaphysically number one, a unit, and therefore a whole number, governed and protected by his divine Principle, God? You have simply to preserve a scientific, positive sense of unity with your divine source, and daily demonstrate this.”
Evil tries to deceive. That is all it can try to do.

Only understanding will destroy evil. Not faith, not some one’s understanding for you. Only Your Own understanding.
Adam and Eve were not two, but one. YOU. It is your Adam; Eve represented the spiritualizing of matter. The “serpent tempted me”. She refused to blame man, but false belief—suggestion. To Eve matter had to be spiritualized. Every living thing must be spiritualized. That is why woman could present Jesus, and Science and Health, to the world.

Eve, mother of all living. Spiritualized all things. Nothing could live unless spiritualized. From this came the “redeemer”.

You cannot use what does not begin in YOURSELF.

The mother of all living was also the mother of the redeemer, without any Adam. Adam had no part. She saw God as the Father of man.
Not thousands of years ago, but NOW. All is now. Truth is instantaneous,–a fact to you now.
Who was the mother of Jesus Christ? YOU were.

Jesus was a “redeeming” of your mind, a mediator between flesh and spirit,–reaching out to the idea that all is matter to destroy it and bring forth the idea that all is spirit. Jesus was the highest human corporeal concept –your concept—destroying the belief that all is matter.
“Personal presentation of evil, that matter is everywhere.” This is the only thing Jesus was presented with.
The mission of Jesus was to show “no life, truth, intelligence, or substance in matter”. He wiped it out completely. Did not leave a vestige—utter nothingness. That WAS THE END of matter.

The next step was to rise to Mind. Nothing more for Jesus to do. “It is finished”. Destroy my body. Prove to yourselves that it has no life. Who was it was finished? YOU did. Of course YOU said it. Your highest concept met matter at every turn. The Christian era was the first phase of Christianity, OF YOUR REDEMPTION. From What? Only from one thing. MATTER. NOW you are confronted with an entirely different situation, a new argument entirely.
You came into MIND (the mind era) 1900 years ago. Don’t go back. YOU ARE NEVER CONFRONTED WITH MATTER. It is finished. You finished it 1900 years ago, All is Mind. The only argument you have to meet now is malicious mind, pure malicious mind.

To deal with matter is dealing with belief. It is being lulled asleep by hypnotic suggestion. You are being fooled. You may change a belief of sickness for a belief of health, etc., but where does that get you? You are getting nowhere exchanging one belief for another belief. Malicious mind would lull you to sleep. There is only one thing to do, HANDLE HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION always and in all things. It is up to you.
You don’t do a single thing in your daily life but what is touched by hypnotic suggestion. Wake up,–and listen.

Mrs. Eddy:
“What Joy is ours in Christian Science! Infinite Love all our own, tireless Love watching and waiting, pointing the path, guiding our footsteps and turning them hither and thither as wisdom directs—then when the lesson is learned, supplying the need and ending the warfare.”

Letter
Reference to Mr. Eustace’s letter of January 11, 1956.
New York, N. Y.
7 September, 1955

Dear . . . .

You are away overdue for a letter. Mrs. . . . . said I would write you, about this great unfolding of the “cct.” to its fullness as spiritual conception only never material, with HWE; and in reference specially to this James C. Cassell, who had a brief association with Mr. Eustace from March to April 26th, when HWE stopped it and disowned any further association or responsibility for Cassell.

In March this year God began a mighty moving of the “cct.” With HWE., to its final fullness as conception spiritual not material, the immaculate conception the only conception in the “understanding and demonstration of divine Truth, Life, and Love” (Man) A brief background will make clear where we are in the “cct.” for this marvelous unfoldment and demonstration HWE this spring was called upon to give, only because of course of his constant full “fidelity to Truth” and Love. My delay in writing has been due to 3 things, partly the extraordinary hot weather leading to our staying mostly at our country place and so much there to be done; but chiefly, to wanting to send you some material in writing on this mighty moving in the “cct.”, and not having quite the material yet to send. This still must wait, but I must delay no longer a word on it, and other material I will send you later on. No harm has come in the delay, for what is unfolding will continue to unfold fully to be seen, for quite a spell.

2.

The next addition to our “cct.” books is that following year, 1948 September, THE EVIL AND ABSURDITY OF THINKING MAN IS GOD OR EVER COULD BECOME GOD. This comes on the 9th year of WHOSO, 6 years before THE THREE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS, in which this man trying to be God lie is so marvelously dealt with, and 7 years before this marvelous demonstration this spring by HWE proving man is not God, a perfect completion in time (see Mess. 1900), of the “cct.” “Evil and Absurdity” 1948 Letter. I could go into these years from 1948 right to this spring in its straight line of unfolding light, but here will touch only its last two.

3.
You know the four Meetings including ours here Dec. 7th, ’52 all so wondrously impersonally put as THE FALSE PROPHET, a veritable 50 year outpouring of the Spirit from HWE’s work (his 1st Class April 1903). We soon were to find this outpouring was to bring all the “cct.” books into its final ONE COMPLETE. That certainly in April 1953 as it appeared, appeared to be so very very complete. But only to mortal finite sense. In rapid order within its 1st year, HWE gave us the 3 pamphlets: CHRON. DATA, showing the full impersonality of all in and as of the O.V. “C.C.T.” COMPLETE; CONSECRATION; then THE THREE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS, the last out by April, 1954. You recall but you will want to most carefully reread and study these articles, how fully HWE., 1st in CONSECRATION, then above all in THE THREE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS, goes into man trying to be but not being God.

We are shown that evil’s main final broadest channel, the now exact negation of final realization of, in, and as the “C.C.T.”, is man trying to be God, that this lie is the lie in the broadest now to handle and destroy, evil’s now negation trying to stand between man and his now final realization of the “clear, correct teaching of Christian Science” as divine Science, the only knowing and healing there is. You recall THE THREE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS WAS NO SOONER ISSUED, than HWE added its now (yellow buff ed.) pages 4-5. Here we get so fully uncovered and laid out, that the key to handling evil trying to operate as man being God, effect thus taking over Cause as man and the universe, is the fact that man’s mind is not man, but mind is ever mind and man is ever man.

4.
Just reread all this to the full, it will be so clear. What I send later adds to it wonderfully but not to your now clarity on it. God called on HWE personally to demonstrate this now last great fundamental right now at the heart of destroying evil, malicious mind. Jesus had to give his demonstration to bring to final fullness, There is no matter, no material sense, no death, God is Life the Father. Mrs. Eddy had to give her demonstration, There is no malicious Animal magnetism, no malicious mental malpractice, no malicious mind, God is Love divine the Mother. You know how wondrously in the latter part of THE FALSE PROPHET HWE describes those two marvellous demonstrations, that their Revelation, teaching, and life-light in sacrifice, would go on to its fullness, not be lost in the lethargy and earthward drift of mortals. That the Light of the personal and then impersonally seen Christ or spiritual idea, with the mortal would as Isaiah says “go through, go through the gates”, of understanding.

In Feb. this year Mrs. Johnston because of her editorial work decided she must be in California in March, both S.F. and L.A., and I could confer with HWE on my Founding work, as well as herself having some real Mind chats. We arrived in L.A. March 19th just as this great moving on the “cct.” began with HWE. He saw us daily for a full week, but confined his seeing to us, and it proved to be so divinely appointed to be there, most important too in respect to this Founding work. Mr. Eustace’s experience-demonstration came to its climax April 26th. I having left L.A. the 12th; and then in June I returned for nearly two weeks of full day sessions with him. I returned to explore to the full some of the points on conception spiritual only; but the visit was most timely

5.
in seeing fully the negative statement that went with his great positive moving, the divinely perfect example it gave of “man trying to be God.”
“Offenses must come, but woe unto him by whom they come”. Jesus had to have his negative statement as Judas. Cassell played the negative role here, but of course it couldn’t touch Mr. Eustace, only to show us more fully conception is spiritual, there is no mortal man, thus no such man that is or can be God. On the P.M. of April 26th, Cassell led a plot, sending police officers out with a warrant to arrest HWE, have him legally committed to a psychopathic ward, legally to be declared “insane” in some degree of mental unbalance. Even as evil thus moved, simultaneously though all unknown to HWE, God moved him to a special declaration of his absolutely full sanity, legally recorded before the very same Court expected to commit him to legal insanity. You have never seen a more marvellous example of God’s hand moving simultaneously to handle the mortal’s negative, as His negative statement more fully to declare His one great ever Positive, positive moving! The hyena in heaven—there is the hyena of course and it must be the only one there is, the one of God in heaven—laughed a sound splitting the diabolical ear-drum of the mortal plotters of malicious mind! Remember always, the negative statement but declares and enforces to awakening mortal sense what God is not unfolding, moving, declaring.

Wondrous things at once then unfolded for HWE, in his larger freedom, more impersonal position with those of the “cct.” and in relation to the ONE VOLUME “C.C.T.” COMPLETE. In this ex-

6.
perience a Dr. said to HWE, “you’ll be dead in three hours.” That Dr. while I was there in June had to face HWE on the Street, “accidentally” passing, and forced to stop to look at the man who would not live three hours! This letter would be far too long, were I to go into many of the wonders of this great moving of the “cct.” to full spiritual conception only, the handling of man is not God in seeing man’s mind is not man!

This is enough however to show you Cassell is no friend or defender of the “cct.”, let alone of the ONE VOLUME “C.C.T.” COMPLETE. You note this letter to you slyly suggests his close relation to HWE and to the O.V.—how I place it etc. in the libraries, how in that to protect it from evil! This liar, thief, and attempted mental assassinator of HWE! But keep this negative statement as Cassell and all he did related solely to Truth, its necessary negative statement to drive home the one Positive, his role the “offenses must come”. His is but a belief devoid of the slightest understanding of Christian Science, its every fundamental as the “cct.” foreign to his slightest sense. His is a sly slippery pamby thought, and I note he seems to especially work on “women”, as in the way he wrote you. I have letters of the same sort to others, and he even tried that on Mrs. Johnston.

Whereas the moving, the “demonstration” was to show man is not God by knowing his mind is not man, how more can you negatively state this, than to try to say HWE’s mind is insane, and that mind is HWE! But that position violates any fundamental you can name of the “cct”. As evil has no embodiment, is never person, place or thing. See Mess. ’01, 12-13, a statement Mrs. Eddy puts

7.
in the 1st Edition of SCIENCE AND HEALTH, page 22. What about a 3rd? God and His idea or man, and then an insane man, a mortal of any kind for that matter? And on and on, this whole lie Cassell so stood and stands for!

I am sending this copy on to HWE mentioning your April letter sending him money in thanks for the pamphlets. From the accounting of Cassell’s I saw, I am sure there was no crediting of any monies received by Cassell for HWE, but it will all be established.
This is longer than I hoped, and doubtless shorter than in some things you would like; but enough for you to dig, more than ever, for the light is rising as never before, ours in the “cct.” to reflect. All this of course had to precede the full Founding Facts’ statement, which in time will come. Spiritual conception and sense alone will fully fathom it. In our one wholly spiritual “cct.” “indissoluble bond” (Mis. 77), I am

Sincerely,
Joseph E. Johnston

P.S. This cannot be mailed until I get in town tonight for your address, so with this space, I shall add a bit you will want to know if not already. When you have a moment I shall be glad to hear what you had previously heard if anything of this great spiritual moving with HWE, and also if Cassell has written you further, or if you know of others he is trying to “saddle up” to.

You know how wonderfully God directed Mr. and Mrs. HWE. in San Jose over the end of ’50 into ’51 though it had been their old manse-home for a half century, to throw out all that “matter”, and go to L.A. for their simple living at the Gaylord. It was all so perfect for Mrs. Eustace’s good-bye to mortal sense in November 1951. That led immediately (see CHRON. DATA) to HWE’s starting toward the ONE VOLUME (Dec. 17, ’51). His small but lovely Apt. was perfect for this work, and for its necessary preliminary, the four Meetings as THE FALSE PROPHET. It was perfect for the year more for the THREE PAMPHLETS. With the year leading to their demonstration by HWE, this lovely spot ended its use for Mind, for it was cramped, and so bound up with Mrs. Eustace in what was to become the full finishing of the “C.C.T.” COMPLETE, the negation for present realization fully faced and established for destruction in now practice. If you go through THE FALSE PROPHET, you will see a never before how all practice, all healing is seen beyond the “clear, correct” letter at the point only of Spirit, and there only at the point as realization. Nothing new here, see “CCT” Class Drill 206; but Oh how driven home! What blocks realization now, then had to be the last great point, battle, understanding,—and that is the insanity, the pure idiocy, as evil’s

P.S. #2.
claim of man being and trying to be God. That is the awful negative role of “offense” Cassell and those with him had to play.

Almost at once in the meeting of this attempted legal mental assassination HWE was led to the most beautiful lovely cute little cottage on a winding Lane everywhere full of flowers, with his one fine yard where he can and does work hours every day, flowers to his heart’s content. His simple little cottage is perfect in its furnishings, and he has a fine Christian woman to care for it, an honest sincere woman of character. No longer is HWE cooped up in a small apartment, though that too was perfect when God used him to complete the ONE VOLUME with its “trimmings”. This home is God’s reward of His especial love to him for all that fidelity, through all this century, through all this strenuous stirring year! I wish you and Mrs. J. and Mrs. . . . all could have seen this home, as I spent day after day with HWE there the last half of June (to get to the full on spiritual conception).

It is fine HWE has no Scientist directly around him. Being too close to HWE as Science, is a little akin to “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing”. The Mind-level is over their heads, at a point well beyond, yet being a Scientist and the mortal always tempted with conceit and unconsciously tempted trying to be God, the temptation is strong to meddle with some supposed “knowing” and “treating”, but only confusion in the ignorance. Mrs. Eddy had to tell those around her what to work on, how to work on it, and usually to mentally let her alone. Though I was with HWE through the 1st main phase of his great moving, I saw so clearly God was moving on spiritual conception, I was not tempted to mentally

P.S. #3.
“butt in”, and God after our great meetings on the Founding Facts’ work, kept me strictly out of it, though I let HWE fully know I was ready at all times for any service.

HWE said to me, One big reason he saw (amongst imp. ones) for a big move was, that he was getting too far ahead of those around him and in general, that the further he moved (witness THE FALSE PROPHET and the 3 pamphlets above all the final one!), the more the fear and leaning on him. All this has been a marvelous feast set before us for our learning, of Mind!

Letter to Mr. James Rowell
Re: Mr. Orcutt’s book entitled
MARY BAKER EDDY AND HER BOOKS
25 January 1951

Mr. James G. Rowell
One, Norway Street
Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Mr. Rowell:
Thank you for your interesting letter of Dec. 7th last, expressing your thought that the pages 140-142 in Mr. Orcutt’s MARY BAKER EDDY AND HER BOOKS are correct and satisfactory statements. A few days after your letter, Mr. Orcutt also wrote saying he was satisfied with these pages as they stood.
Being convinced that these pages are not correct and factual, I decided to delay acknowledging your and his letter until I could review the full official Court Proceedings’ Record. This included all the correspondence between the two boards that led to the trial of 1919-1922, the two months of the original hearings, the lengthy argument by Counsel, and the various rulings and decisions. The arguments by Counsel for the Directors are most pertinent as to these pages l40-l42. Every phase of the controversy is exhaustively dealt with. It is self-evident that these official Proceedings must reveal the truth or falsity of these pages.
Thus my delay, for this review was quite a chore. These Court proceedings cover 1500 pages, large size and small type. At the request of the Court and desire of

2.
Counsel of all parties, the Publishing Society ran off a number of these copies, for official daily use, and as I now understand from your recent letter you have a copy available. At the close of the Trial the Publishing Society offered unused copies at $100 a copy and I took advantage of the offer.

These Court Proceedings are in three sections. The first and main section is Proceedings in Equity 1919-1921, Concerning Deed of Trust of January 25th, 1898 Constituting the Christian Science Publishing Society (1-1187); the second, New Bill in Equity, the one the Directors filed against the Trustees in April 1920 (1-130); and third, Supplement to Proceedings in Equity (3-1-194). For reference abbreviation I refer to the first section as Pro. and to the second and third sections, preface the page reference with a 2 or a 3. This large volume has of course a contents page and some indexes, yet they do not make it easy quickly to trace many specific items or subjects.

Fortunately, one does not have to read the entire verbatim testimony of the full Proceedings, to determine whether the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books led to and was an issue in the Trial. Certain main documents in the Proceedings fully settle this question. They shorten the review of the essential facts and are the ones I will refer

3.
to. These major documents are in effect an epitomy of the testimony, arguments, and rulings. The reading of the entire Proceedings is of course enlightening.
Before going into these Trial documents there is one devious and serious mistake, to which I called Mr. Orcutt’s attention when writing him. This you can instantly verify. In listing some of Mrs. Eddy’s vast achievings, on page 80 Mr. Orcutt states: “Organized The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts, in September 1892.”

In the Historical Sketch of her Mother Church Manual, Mrs. Eddy dates The Mother Church, from April 12th, 1879, upon her drafting of “the Tenets of The Mother Church” (Man. 17::15). She then goes on to characterize her request and the action of twelve of her students in September 1892, as a reorganization of “the Christian Science Church,” and naming it “The First Church of Christ, Scientist.” (Man. 18:12-17). *(Mrs. Eddy here is explicit and clear. This simple mistake though a fundamental misconception perhaps can be more readily re-stated than the misconception and mistakes in the pages 140-142.)

LETTERS BETWEEN THE TWO BOARDS DEFINE CONTROVERSY LEADING TO TRIAL.

Your letter of Dec. 7th last is specific, that you share the beliefs and statements of Mr. Orcutt in these pages.
Mr. Orcutt for example on page 141 states: “When

4.
the Trustees under the Will became aware of the extent to which the Board of Trustees was departing from what was considered to be the terms of the contract, they took prompt action to cancel it, but the Chairman and his associates prepared to fight.” He then proceeds to describe the resulting Trial and its decision.
In your letter you write: “The difficulty which arose in the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works was only one of a number of conflicting points of view . . . This cancellation of contract for publishing Mrs. Eddy’s works was not the only matter that the Trustees of the Publishing Society went to court about, but simply one of them.”

Now the official full correspondence between the two boards shows this just simply isn’t so, that such statements are without foundation and untrue.
The full correspondence between the two boards leading to the Trial is in the Proceedings, but three major letters between them in the six months preceding the Trial, set forth carefully and completely the controversy and define its issue. These letters make clear that the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books had nothing to do with and was not involved in the controversy that led to the Trial.

These three letters can be read in an hour or so. Even without going further into the Proceedings, dealing

5.
with the course of the Trial, this full defining by the two boards themselves of what led to the Trial, makes se1f-evident the necessity of truth to rewrite these pages 140-142, to revise the concept back of them as in your letter.

These three letters are: 1) Sept. 30th, 1918 – Trustees to Directors, in which they state most fully their understanding of the relation of the two boards, as set forth in their 1898 Deed and every Manual direction; 2) The Directors’ answer to this letter, on October 8th, 1918 in which they fully state their opposing view; and 3) only a month away from the Directors’ removal vote of a Trustee, and the filing by the Trustees of their Bill in Equity complaint, the Directors on February 24th, 1919, again at length defined to the Trustees what the controversy was about. These three letters completely define and explain the controversy. They are found respectively in the Proceedings, pages 15-17, 18-19, and 35-36.

All three have but one issue or theme. That is, control of one board by the other, or two equal boards in full cooperation. In the Trustees’ view full spiritua1 cooperation was an absolute necessity, because of complementary duties in the two Deeds along with Mrs. Eddy’s will setting forth the duties of the two boards, and The Mother Church Manual’s spiritual guidance for both, along with all of Mrs. Eddy’s works in guidance for the practice of Christian

6.
Science. This full spiritual cooperation is specifically set forth of course in the joint legal requirement in the 1898 Publishing Deed and the 1901 Will of identically stated purpose: “Of more effectually promoting and extending the religion of Christian Science as taught by me (Mrs. Eddy).”
There is even no hint of reference in the full statements of these letters, of the controversy that led to the Trial, relating in any way to the Trustees’ publishing as agents for the Directors as Will Trustees, of Mrs. Eddy’s books. These letters make clear the book publishing was not in the controversy leading to the Trial.

SUBSTANCE OF THE THREE LETTERS.

The closing statements in the September 30th, 1918 letter from the Trustees to the Directors sum up their position as to the controversy: “These two boards, designated and constituted by our Leader, each having its own well defined work, one being the governing board of the Church and its activity and the other the governing board of the Publishing Society and all its publications, must inevitably cooperate at every point. This cooperation, however, can only be accomplished by a right mutual respect for each other’s boards and their respective work. Yet when all is said and done, in spite of the tremendous importance of the letter, still how small is the letter compared to that Spirit

7.
that must inspire everything bequeathed to us by our Leader in the service of God. It is in the unity of this spirit that this letter is written, signed and sent.”

(Signed by Trustees Pro. 16-17)

In their answer of October 8, 1918 to this letter from the Trustees, the Directors likewise devote their answer to this issue as the one issue: . . . the statute quoted on page 130 of the Manual and . . . the Deed of Trust based on that statute (1892), and . . . the Church By-laws, . . . clearly confer superior authority on the Christian Science Board of Directors . . . Of necessity there must be a board or body having superior authority in such an institution as that which represents Christian Science. If the Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society were not subordinate to the Christian Science Board of Directors there would be two boards having equal authority in regard to the same affairs.” (Pro. 18-19)

Three weeks before the Directors voted removal of a Trustee, on St. Patrick’s Day March 17th, 1919, they sent to the Trustees on February 24th, 1919 their final full statement of this issue and their position, and closed this letter with request to the Trustees to sign the following statement: “It is mutually understood by the Christian Science Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees of the

8.
C. S. Publishing Society that the former Board, as in relation to the latter Board, has final authority in regard to the editorial policy of the official organs of The Mother Church, and final authority in regard to all matters affecting the policy of The Mother Church or the Cause of Christian Science.” (Pro. 37)
These letters certainly show an issue and a deep and important one. They conclusively demonstrate, however, contrary to these pages 140-142 and the latter in agreement with them, that the Trustees’ publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works as agents under contract to the Will-Trustees’ Directors, had nothing to do with the controversy leading to the Trial.

NO BOOK PUBLISHING CONTROVERSY BETWEEN DIRECTORS AND TRUSTEES DURING TRIAL.

The next proposition in these pages and your letter is, that controversy between the two boards over the Trustees’ publishing or Mrs. Eddy’s works was an issue during the nearly three year long Trial.

If so, then as in the above letters before the Trial, the full official Court Proceedings must necessarily reflect and substantiate the statements of these pages 140-142. Examination of the full Proceedings, however, as in its record of the pre-Trial letters, shows that this supposed controversy over the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works, between the two boards, never at any time entered the Trial.

9.
The direct original hearings ran from June 3rd to August 2nd, 1919, exactly two months. All concerned, Trustees, Directors, the questionable Director Dittemore, were exhaustively examined and cross-examined in the usual court procedure. The “spot1ight” was thrown fully on the affairs and relations of the two boards, with nothing left in the dark or hidden.

The short-cut, as it were, to checking these pages 140-142 is especially to follow the full closing arguments of Counsel for the Directors. Naturally they deal with all the evidence the Directors introduced in controversy during the Trial. These short-cuts include some other documents and also especially the Master’s Report and the full Court’s final decision.

THE DIRECTOR’S CONTROVERSY TRIAL POSITION

April 4th, 1919 Directors answer to Trustee Bill in Equity (Trustees – Pro. 983-989: Directors – 992- 997). There is no reference in either document to the book publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works.

September 8th, 1919 – Governor Bates’ Closing Argument for Directors to the Master (Pro. 760-804). In these forty-four large size – small type pages, there was plenty of room to bring in everything. In fact on page 800

10.
the Governor goes into particular complaints as against the Trustees. But there is no reference to the Trustees as violating their publishing contract, or as going contrary “to Mrs. Eddy’s original intentions” or to any dispute as to ending the contract, as stated in these pages 140-142.

September 11th, 1919, Mr. Whipple, in opening his Closing Argument to the Master, urged the Master to inspect personally every phase of the actual publishing work. In fact in the final hearings in January 1922, Trustees’ Counsel again urged this same invitation on the presiding Justice Crosby. Self-evidently, the Trustees felt they had nothing to hide but something to show in the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works. This hardly squares with the inference of the book publishing conditions in these pages 140-142. (Pro. 855-856; 3-l75)

January 10th to February 19th, 1920 – thirteen days of hearings by the Master on his tentative draft Report for the Full Bench, with all Counsel of the several parties involved. (Pro. 956). The objections and exceptions taken by the various Counsel is not in the full Proceedings but published separately. The Directors objection to the Master’s finding of fact in his paragraph #50, indicates the Directors’ firm desire for its continuance.

11.
The Directors’ objection was to this statement by the Master: “Their publication (of Mrs. Eddy’s works) forms no part of the business contemplated by the Deed of 1898. The agreed royalties therefrom are paid over by the plaintiffs not according to said Deed, but to the Trustees under said Will as required by the contract.” (Pro. 919)

Pages 140-142 of course assert that the Directors even before the Trial opened were trying to cancel this publishing contract. Yet here in February 1920, Counsel for the Directors object to this finding of fact by the Master: “These defendants object to the statement in paragraph 50, ‘Their publication forms no part of the business contemplated by her Deed of l898.’” (Objections of Defend- ants’ Dickey, etc., (76a-173), published separately February 27th, 1920). It was the Directors who sought out the Trustees in 1917 to enter into this publishing contract. Their objection here can only indicate desire for its continuance.
March 6th, 1920 – Master’s Report filed. In understanding the Court’s final decision on November 23rd, 1921, it must be clearly kept in mind that the Court upheld in their entirety the Master’s findings of fact, differing with him only in the interpretation of the law applicable to the removal phrase in the Deed, that the removal power of the Directors did not cease with the dissolution of its there co-exerciser, the First Members. (Pro. 905-927)

12.
November 29th, 1920 – Governor Bates’ Closing Argument on behalf of the Directors before the Massachusetts’ Supreme Court (Pro. 1103-1177). Here as in the Closing Argument before the Master in September 1919, Counsel had review of all the evidence of controversy introduced by the Directors. No such controversy between the two boards is referred to.

Thus from June 3rd, 1919, to November 29th, 1920, Counsel for the Directors presented their evidence of controversy and argued out this evidence at greatest length. Nowhere, however, is there any word of this book publishing controversy between the two boards, either as a cause of or involved in the Trial.

DIRECTORS’ OWN DIRECT CHARGES AGAINST TRUSTEES

On two occasions during the Trial period the Directors brought their own Bills of Complaint, as it were, against the Trustees. If these pages 140-142 were well founded and true, certainly in their own direct Bills of Complaint the Directors would have shown some reflection of what these pages assert. Even more if possible than in the Trial proper, they had the same necessity to use every possible charge against the Trustees they felt so deeply compelled to control or oust.

13.
April 12th, 1920 – Directors file own Bill in Equity against Trustees (2-1-4), along with intervening suits by others opposing Trustees (5-130). The Master’s Report filed in March had gone sharply against the Directors, and this was the Directors’ and some other Scientists’ response to that situation. In their own Bill, the Directors are in position to state fully all issues in controversy between the two boards. The Directors, however, refer to no controversy as to the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books.

December 14th, 1921 – Directors’ Letters to the two remaining Trustees summoning them with full charges to the Directors’ own removal hearings (3-5-10). The Court’s Decision in November preceding, upheld under certain conditions, the Directors’ legal right of removal under the 1898 Deed. A problem of the Trustees’ resignation then arose. The Directors wanted the resignation, but wanted no simultaneous examination of accounts, with acceptance or the immediate facing of disputed items. Anyone can see what this could have led to. The Trustees appealed to the Court to resign to them with a full accounting.

To try to circumvent the Trustees’ appeal to the Court for resignation and accounting, the Directors set their own hearing for removal. Here the Directors had an

14.
absolutely free hand to level any and every charge against the Trustees they felt warranted. Yet there is no slightest word or reflection of the statement in these pages 140-142, and as confirmed in the viewpoint of your letter.

In the official Court Proceedings, before the Trial, during the Trial, in the Master’s Report, and in the final decision, is there to be found any word of controversy as between the two boards in the Publishing Society’s publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books.

DIRECTORS’ BOOK PUBLISHING CONTROVERSY WITH DITTEMORE.

This is the one book publishing controversy item in the full Proceedings. It is hardly a controversy, more an episode. This episode had nothing to do with the Trustees. It had to do with the Director’s former associate Director, who at the time of this book publishing argument legally was still one of the Directors. About a month after the Trustees filed their Bill in Equity against the Directors, Dittemore in April 1919 got a Court injunction forbidding the Directors ousting him from his church business office, and from in any way infringing upon his rights then before the Court for a decision. Since Mrs. Eddy’s departure, it has been customary to publish yearly in the Manual a list of the Directors and last elected officers. In June, 1919, however , the Directors as Will

15.
Trustees made no request to their publishing agent to reset this Manual fly-leaf page with the then new names. The point was that Dittemore’s name would be replaced with another then serving in his place.

Approaching the next annual meeting, or in the year’s interim, the Directors asked the Trustees to make this fly-leaf change, saying many in the field were questioning about it. The Trustees were willing but advised in view of the injunction Dittemore had obtained against the Directors it would seem advisable if possible to get Dittemore’s acceptance of this change. For some months the Directors tried to get this. Finally, to avoid misunderstanding of their position as agents in this for the Directors, the Trustees decided to wait no longer and made the change the Directors wanted. Learning of this, Dittemore again went into Court, and was able to get a further injunction specifically forbidding this Manual fly-leaf change. Presumably this same thing would have happened no matter whom the publisher of Mrs. Eddy’s books. The Trustees in accord with their contract were anxious to oblige the Directors. The Court forbade that action then. This episode has nothing to do with what is set forth in these pages 140-142. (2-123-127)

HEARINGS FOR TRUSTEES’ RESIGNATION TO COURT AND ACCOUNTING

In January, 1922, Justice Crosby of the

16.
Massachusetts’ Supreme Court held the hearings on the Trustees’ appeal to resign directly to the Court with simultaneous financial accounting. In the course of this hearing there were five days of full direct and cross-examination of the two remaining Trustees, the business Manager, and of others on behalf of both boards.

In this full financial accounting, an important phase was the taking over of the Dudley and Hodge Bindery, and of the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books, from March 31st, 1919 to November 30th, 1921, virtually the entire period of the Trial. If the statements on pages 140-142 were correct, surely some reflection of them would be found in this careful examination of the book publishing during the entire Trial. There is no word of disorder or failure whatever as to this publishing. (3-60-l78)

The day following the conclusion of the hearing on the Trustees’ resignation to the Court and the accounting, on January 20th, 1922, Justice Crosby held a hearing for nominations to the Court for his appointment of the new Trustees. Clifford P. Smith, Counsel for years to the Directors and through the Trial, and then also Manager of the Committee of Publication, prefaced his specific recommendations on behalf of the Directors with a review of the Publishing Society’s activities. Mr. Smith did not begin in his review with the periodicals and the

17.
Monitor, and the church and practitioner advertising cards.

Instead he began with the Publishing Society’s publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works. He advanced no criticism of this publishing under the October, 1917, contract. He makes clear on behalf of the Directors the importance of this book publishing by the Publishing Society (3-179). On this last day of Trial for argument, again is contradiction of the statement of these pages 140-142, that the Directors long had been trying to cancel this publishing contract, even before the start in March 1919 of the litigation controversy. Mr. Orcutt in fact points out it was almost a year after the Court’s Decision that, whatever the reasons, the Trustee-Will Directors cancelled this contract.

To go into some of the evidence in these five days of hearings on the book publishing:

THE BINDERY

The taking over of the Dudley and Hodge Bindery in May 1920, Mr. Orcutt describes and most favorably, in the pages 142-143. From the beginning of her limp leather editions, Mrs. Eddy had entrusted their binding to them, chiefly because of Mr. Hodge. In time he says the binding of Mrs. Eddy’s books had become practically their entire business.

18.
Mr. Hodge, now elderly, decided to retire. Here was a possible crisis facing the Publishing Society in its publishing contract for Mrs. Eddy’s works. Mr. Orcutt quite approves the Trustees’ action in taking over the Bindery. The evidence however shows that the Trustees did this in the face of opposition by the Directors: “. . . the Trustees under the Will rather demurred to our taking over the bindery, and we have hesitated to do anything with it (the then $98,000 plus profits) until the two boards should work in a little bit more harmony . . . The Trustees under the Will opposed our taking the bindery.” (3-111, Jan. 16th, 1922)
It is stated the Publishing Society’s operating profit from the bindery, from May 5th, 1920, to November 30th, 1921, was $98,303.65 (3-96). This is a creditable showing, most important doubtless in assuring continuing efficiency in the binding of Mrs. Eddy’s books, but also the increased assets and revenue for the Publishing Society, the Directors as Trustees under the Will, and as to their Treasurer of The First Church.

It is hardly consonant that the Trustees whom Mr. Orcutt has doing so well on pages 142-143, he has doing so badly on pages 140-141. The facts of the Proceedings of course are with him on his pages 142 – 143 but entirely contrary to his statements on pages 140-141.

19.
Since Mr. Orcutt’s book appeared .this past fall, the Manager of the Bindery from its taking over in May 1920, until the Court’s acceptance on January 20th, 1922 of the Trustees’ resignation, after seeing these pages 140-142, in part has this to say:

“I finally procured a copy of the Orcutt book and can truthfully say that while managing the operations’ end of the Dudley and Hodge Bindery there was no evidence at the plant of the conditions he claimed existed, neither did I sense them . . . I spent two months learning about each step under the watchful eye of Mr. Hodge . . . I recall no instance during the remaining of my two years period there when orders could not be filled as quickly and as often as required. True, there was a leather problem but it did not delay us. Mr. Hodge helped solve it before his departure and it did not arise again . . . Now to get back again to Orcutt’s statements beginning on page 140 – ‘Did not conform’ etc., and ‘Mrs. Eddy’s original intentions’ — it would seem that if conditions were as wrong as stated there would have been some evidence of it at the Bindery. There were none. Nothing but complimentary remarks from Mr. Hodge regarding dealings with (trustees) Board . . . I recall how much the manufacturing routine was lessened in the Publishing House (referring to the periodicals) following the opening

20.
of the litigation, but I did not know that the binding of Mrs. Eddy’s works suffered similarly. There was no suggestion of it when I was sent down there nor was there a suggestion of there ever having been during the months preceding my advent.”
In weighing the above statement it should be remembered that this Manager’s tenure began in May, 1920 following the organized “walkout”, in March, 1920, of approximately half of the Publishing Society’s employees. On page141 Mr. Orcutt describes Mr. Hunt’s participation from Mrs. Eddy’s book publishing department, in this “walkout.” The relation in timing of these events thus makes doubly impressive the above statements of the Manager who took over the Bindery for the Trustees upon Mr. Hodge’s departure.

SALES OF MRS. EDDY’S WORKS DURING THE TRIAL.

These pages 140-142 surely imply that copies of Mrs. Eddy’s works, in this period of the Trial, were hindered and lessened in their going forth freely to the public, and fulfilling all demand. Mr. Orcutt does not directly say this, but this is what one would gather from the book publishing disorder he so stresses.
The testimony shows that in March, 1920, at a pre-arranged moment half of the Publishing House employees

21.
walked out, 250 out, 250 left. (3-70). That should upset ordinary routine in some way, including doubtless the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books. The testimony also shows “that we very largely increased production from some 400 or 500 books a day to 900 and 1000 a day.” (3:’:’82) This testimony also shows “that we never paid any attention to night or day, we go all the time.” (3-133).

Now, what are the exact figures of sales of Mrs. Eddy’s works during the Trial period?

From March 31st, 1919 to November 30th, 1921, virtually the entire Trial time, the receipts from the sales of Mrs. Eddy’s works were $2,429,220.04. The net was $1,093,545.30. On this, royalty was paid to the Directors as Trustees under the Will, $85l,9l6.01. This volume of sales on Mrs. Eddy’s books seems most substantial. It hardly fits the “break-down” picture given in these pages 140-142. (3-96-97)

In addition to the over $850,000 Which the Directors as Trustees under the Will, received from this publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works – the Publishing Society from its own profit in this book publishing further credited the Directors via the Treasurer of The First Church an additional $281,502.16. In fact, from their additional profits from their regular publishing the Trustees credited the Church Treasurer in this Trial period a total of $385,663.05.

22.
This proof and performance of the Trustees’ publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works is substantial. A mighty stream of these books obviously went forth. The public, the Trustees under the Will, the Publishing Society, and the Church Treasurer, all benefited in the period of the Trial, in the Trustees’ publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works.
In the hearings in January, 1922, before Justice Crosby, the business Manager and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, both had occasion to declare their conviction in the publishing and sale of Mrs. Eddy’s works: “. . . has it been the policy of the Publishing House to have anything connected with the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s works the best of its sort? A. Always, in the best taste and in the best way, we know how to put it up . . . and in all our publications; the best form that they can be put out in is none too good for that work.” (3-126) Again: “I think our Leader’s works should be in the finest location and the finest place possible.” (3-141) And again: “I should say that it was very necessary that Mrs. Eddy’s writings be in a place where people could get them and without any difficulty.” (ibid.)

COURT DECISION ON DIRECTORS’ “CONTROL”

The facts of the Massachusetts’ Supreme Court’s November 23rd, 1921 Decision is of first importance to

23.
understand, and especially for the Trustees of the 1898 Deed. From the moment this final decision in the Trial controversy was handed down, there was, there has been a continuing misunderstanding and misstatement about it.

Immediately upon the decision, Mr. Clifford P. Smith of the Directors’ Counsel and Manager of the Committees on Publication gave a statement to the press whf.ch included this phrase: “. . . the decision of the Supreme Court creating the Board of Directors the unchallenged governing power of the church.” (3-112) What Mr. Smith’s whole statement there shows is, that he took the Court’s final decision as full legal confirmation of the Directors’ basic and essential claim, as so well summarized by the Directors in the February 24th, 1919, statement they had asked the Trustees to sign. (previously quoted, Pro. 37)

Mr. Orcutt says: “the lawsuit was finally settled in favor of the Christian Science Board of Directors in November 1921 . . . the emphasis the legal decision placed upon Mrs. Eddy’s extraordinary foresight in plans for the distant future which were so fundamentally sound that here they, withstood bitter legal attack.” (141-142) Obviously here, Mr. Orcutt has gone beyond his printing experience story. With the background of his pages on the Trial, however, he implies the kind of sweeping decision

24.
for the Directors that they embodied in their letters to the Trustees, as fully exemplified in their letters previously referred to of October 8th, 1918, and February 24th, 1919. (Pro.. 18-19, 35-37)

Your letter of December 7th, Mr. Rowell, states this more clearly to the point: . . . “the final decision of the Supreme Court of the State of Massachusetts upheld the Directors’ interpretation of the Manua1 of The Mother Church as vesting the over-all directing and governing power of the Christian Science movement, including The Christian Science Publishing Society, in the office of the Directors of The Mother Church, thus repudiating opposing claims advanced by the then Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society.”

Well, did the Court in its Decision do this?

WHAT THE DECISION RULES

The Court certainly and definitely ruled — though courts in time have reversed themselves — that the Trustees under various legal conditions could be removed by the Directors. This removal Decision is not, however, based on any legal authority of the By-laws as such, or on the Directors’ interpretation of the Church Manua1 By-1aws. It is based on the Court’s application of the law, contrary to the Master’s application of the law, to the phrase in

25.
the 1898 Deed, that legally established a joint power of removal by the Directors and the First Members. This entire Decision runs to the one basic issue, that legally from the Court’s point of view, because of the law and not legally because of the By-laws, this power of removal by the Directors survived to them after the dissolution of the First Members.

Beyond this ruling on removal, based on the law and not on the By-laws, were the further rulings in this Decision in favor of or against the Directors’ Trial contentions and arguments? The facts show the Court ruled against the Directors.

Whether one starts with the Directors’ original statement as the Dittemore memorandum in February 1916, of their controversy in the Trial, or more to the point and simply, takes the short February 24th, 1919, statement the Directors asked the Trustees to sign, the epitomy of their position may be stated as, “the Directors control the Trustees in all their duties and functioning, and in fact control all that pertains to the Cause and practice of Christian Science.”

The Court rejected this view, ruled the opposite as to the Trustees, and made no ruling about control of all pertaining to Christian Science. The important fact to remember in this Decision is that the Court rejects the

26.
Master’s Report only in his interpretations of’ the law as to the joint removal phrase in the 1898 Deed. The Court in its Decision positively accepts and affirms all of the facts found by the Master.

The Decision says: “The conclusion that the power or removal of a Trustee is now vested in the Board of five Directors is contrary to that of the Master, but it is in substance and effect the application of different principles to the facts found by the Master. The facts found by him are accepted in their entirety.” (Pro. 1175)
In the decree entering the Decision and dissolving the Trustees’ injunction or 1919 against the Directors, Justice Crosby specifically confirmed the Court’s confirmation of the entire findings of fact by the Master:

“2. That the defendant’s exceptions to the Master’s Report so far as they relate to rulings that the defendant Directors had no power to remove a Trustee under the Deed of January 25th, 1898, and that the removal of Mr. Rowlands was ineffectua1, be and the same are hereby sustained.”

“3. That otherwise the Master’s Report, except the paragraphs thereof relating to the Dittemore-Knott controversy, be and the same is hereby confirmed”. (3-31-4)

27.
The question then is, what finding of fact did the Master make as to this supposed “control” by the Directors, that would not only subordinate the Trustees to the Directors, but all that pertains to the “Cause of Christian Science”? And so the control of all Christian Scientists in the practice of Christian Science, as the Directors so perfectly state this proposition February 24th, 1919, to the Trustees to sign.

MASTER’S FINDING OF FACT ON “SUBORDINATION”

The Master’s most specific finding as to the Trustees’ subordination to the Directors is to be found in his #52 so-called paragraph: “52. Close alliance and complete accord between the Board of Directors, controlling the church as it has since 1901, and the Publishing Society Trustees, are obviously necessary to the success either of the church or of said Trustees in that part of the work of promoting and extending Mrs. Eddy’s doctrines for which each body was established and now exists.

“’Without the Publishing Society’s activities, the church would want adequate means of ready access to the widely dispersed believers in its teachings beyond its immediate congregation or membership, or to the general public among which it seeks to spread its teachings.

28.
Without the church’s support and alliance, the literature issued by the Publishing Society would lose that character which recommends it to the great body of its readers.

“But that the necessary co-operation between the above two directing bodies is impossible unless the Publishing Society Trustees are subjected to the supervision and final authority of the Directors, does not so plainly appear as to require the conclusion that Mrs. Eddy must have intended such subjection when she established the trust. Had she then intended it, there would have been provision in the Deed of 1898, establishing it in express and unmistakable terms; it is hardly supposable that, instead of such provisions, the deed should have made the Trustees subject only to her supervision, as it does in par. 3. Neither in the terms of the deed, nor in the subsequent By-laws, do I find anything which makes it unreasonable to suppose that she apprehended no such danger of dissension between two Boards, both composed of firm, loyal and consistent believers in her doctrines, as would require the express subordination of one to the other, in order to secure the necessary co-operation between them.” (Pro. 919)

This paragraph #3 in the 1898 Deed the Master refers to in his last sub-paragraph above of #52, is, of course, as follows:

29.
“3 Said trustees shall energetically and judiciously manage the business of the Publishing Society on a strictly Christian basis, and upon their own responsibility, and without consulting me about details, subject only to my supervision, if I shall at any time elect to advise or direct them.”
The Massachusetts’ Supreme Court in the embodiment of all of the Master’s findings of fact in its Decision, thus rules that the Trustees are not subordinate to the Directors; rather, that mutual and full cooperation between them, as equals, each with the specific duties for which each was founded, and with no interference of one board by the other, is indispensable to the success of their Trusteeships.

JUSTICE CROSBY’S JAN. 1922 INTERPRETATION
AND FURTHER RULING ON DIRECTORS’ “CONTROL”

In the January 1922 hearings for the Trustees’ resignation and accounting to the Court, Counsel for the Directors, trying to speed the conclusion of the hearing proposed to Justice Crosby that the Directors themselves operate the Publishing Society Trust, until the Justice appointed the new Trustees.
“Mr. Bates . . . These Directors have the power and this loyal Church that stands behind them will give

30.
them the means to carry on this Trust in the way in which Mrs. Eddy, their great Leader, contemplated. This Court has said they have authority . . . , by all implication of language they have the right to do this in the interim that prevails until your Honor can decide this single question of good faith. I ask your Honor —

“THE COURT. Do you understand that the decision held that the Directors had all the powers that the Trustees had under this Deed of 1898?

“MR. BATES. The decision said that the Directors were the final arbiters, and not the Trustees. The decision said, in words which I do not quote exactly, but in effect, that they had a supervisory power. Having that power, and having a power of the appointment of editor and business manager, I submit to your Honor that there is no reason why they (Directors) cannot go on and carry on this Trust, not only without loss but to its great benefit, and there is no interim, there is no harm to come . . . there is ample provision for the carrying on of this Trust by these Directors, upon whom this responsibility is placed by the Supreme Court as well as by the Trustees and by the Church Manual.

“THE COURT. Do you understand that there is anything in that decision which authorizes the Directors to take the place of the Trustees and act as Trustees under the Deed of 1898?

31.
“MR. BATES. I understand that there is sufficient there in the matter, in the statement that they are the final arbiters of all these questions of publications, to show that they would have the right to carry this Trust on in such an interim . . .

“THE COURT. Well, I want to get back to that Deed again. I do not understand that there is anything in the decision of the Court which authorizes the statement that the Directors take the place in any sense of the Trustees. No contention was made in the other case that it was not necessary for the Trustees, either the Trustees then appointed or some other Trustees, to carry out the terms of that Deed. I do not think it was contended by either the Directors or the Trustees that the duties which arise under that Deed were not wholly apart from the duties of the Directors. What the case in effect said was that under the Circumstances, in view of everything that had happened, in view of the Court’s interpretation of the Deed in connection with the Manual, the Directors had a power to remove the Trustees.

“Mr. BATES. Yes, your Honor.

“THE COURT. But it did not in any sense try to intimate that when those Trustees were removed that the Trust created by the Deed should not be carried on by

32.
other Trustees, acting under the Deed . . . So I do not understand. This contention which you make now today is a contention that so far as I know has never been made in the other case. The case was before the full court and decided by the full court. The contention was never made that the Directors had the same power to carry out this Trust as the Trustees had.” (3-40-41)

Earlier in this January 1922 hearing in discussion with Counsel for the Trustees, Justice Crosby further interpreted or defined the Directors’ removal authority:

“THE COURT. Do you concede aside from the proceedings which are pending, that the Directors would have the power to remove these Trustees without any cause whatever?

“MR. WHIPPLE. I do not so understand under the decision of the Supreme Court. I understand that the Court has pointed out in its recent opinion how they should proceed, that they should give a hearing. If they have a right to do that, for any cause whatever, there would be no need of giving a hearing, because a hearing implies a judicial determination of a fact. That is, the Supreme Court hasn’t said, whatever it may have said about that part of it, that they could remove the Trustees

33.
appointed under this Deed of Trust without a hearing, and a hearing means the kind of a hearing that is implied under such circumstances.

“THE COURT. I did not mean to interrupt you.

“MR. WHIPPLE. The Court even has indicated the very broad power on the part of the Directors for removal, and the exercise of a very broad power and discretion, but not the power to remove merely for prejudice or personal hostility or for some whimsical or ulterior purpose not connected with the good of the Trust. In other words they are given broad powers as to the determination of causes which affect the administration of the Trust, but I do not understand that they have said that the same rule which has always guided the Court with regard to these matters has been abrogated, namely, that there should be a real hearing and a real judicial determination of some fact.

“THE COURT. The Court did hold that the removal of Rowlands, if that is the name of the man who was attempted to be removed — that the Directors did have power to remove him after hearing.

“MR WHIPPLE. Quite right.

“THE COURT. I assume that acting reasonably, they would have the power to remove a Trustee?

34.

“MR. WHIPPLE. No question about it.” (3-12~13)

In his hearing on January 20th, 1922, the last and final day of argument in this long Trial, Justice Crosby received recommendations from all the parties in the Trial for new Trustees he was to appoint. At the close of this day’s hearing Justice Crosby further ruled or defined, “As to what the respective duties of the Directors and the Trustees are, and that “Neither has the right to infringe upon the duties of the other. But it is very essential that they should act together, that they should not be engaged in controversy.”

“There ought not be any misapprehension, in view of the decision of the Court in a recent case, as to what the respective duties of the Directors and the Trustees are. The Trustees to be appointed are officers who are appointed under and by virtue of the terms of a legal instrument. I speak of a legal instrument as wholly disassociated from what might be called a religious or ecclesiastical document. This Deed of January 25th, 1898, is a Deed governed by the principles of law which govern the construction of trust instruments. The duties of the Trustees are defined by that Deed, and they are called upon to perform their duties in accordance with the Deed. That should not be forgotten by anybody. And if they

35.
do not perform their duties in accordance with that Deed, they are subject to removal by the Court.

“In performance of their duties they are obliged to act more or less in concert with the Directors in the carrying on of this Church organization; and with the Directors and the Trustees coming in close contact with each other it is of supreme importance that the persons to be appointed Trustees should be men who, when they are appointed at least ought not to be hostile to the Directors. They ought to be men who, in the first instance, are capable and qualified to perform their duties. In the next place, they ought to be men who at the same time are willing to work in harmony with the Directors in the proper conduct of this great church.

“Now, the Directors have certain functions and certain duties as officers of this organization to perform. The Trustees have the duties which are imposed on them by the Trust. Neither has the right to infringe upon the duties of the other. But it is very essential that they should act together, that they should not be engaged in controversy . . . .

“I shall endeavor in the selection of Trustees to select men who are disinterested as far as I can, and capable, and they should be men who are not only good

36.
Christian Scientists, but some of them at least ought to be good business men and competent to carryon an enterprise which involves the expenditure of eight or ten millions of dollars a year or more. It needs a man of some business ability to carry on that part of it. And at the same time I do not overlook the character of the men, the kind of men whom Mrs. Eddy thought originally should be appointed.” (3-189-190)

RELATION OF DECISION TO THE TWO POSITIONS

That can safely be said about the Court’s 1921 Decision is, that the Court did affirm the legal right of the Directors, under certain conditions, to remove a Trustee. On the surface, power of removal would seem to confer a large control of one board by the other. ‘As shown above at length however, the Court goes on to rule against such control. The Trustees operate under this 1898 Deed and must fully carry out its terms, with no interference from the other board, and the necessity upon both is constantly to cooperate. The Deed, specifically confirmed by the Manual, makes the Trustees solely responsible, unless the Court itself has occasion to do so, to fill any vacancies in the Trust. As Charitable Trusts, Mrs. Eddy founded both boards ever to be within the purview of the Massachusetts’ Supreme Court, ever subject to its legal balance and final supervision in equity. Members of either board, and at least Christian

37.
Scientists in general, have the right to petition this Court for an accounting, financial and otherwise, of both of these Trusts. (2-90)
When this Decision of the Court ending the Trial is properly read, both its direct statements and its inclusion of the entire finding of facts by the Master, along with Justice Crosby’s interpretation and rulings on the Decision, an accurate comparison can then be made, of the relation of the Decision to the each well defined positions of the two boards.

Careful reading of the Trustees’ letter of Sept. 30th, 1918 to the Directors, apart from the question of legal power of removal, shows that the Decision confirms the Trustees essential position. Again, to repeat, both boards operate under distinct legal instruments, with separate and well defined duties, neither to interfere with the other, but with full and complete spiritual cooperation at all times necessary. Most specifically, the Trustees operate under the 1898 Deed, and they must fulfill its every provision and direction or be subject to removal by the Court. That the Trustees’ Sept. 30th, 1918, letter is in full accord with this basic concept is undeniable.

The essential position of the Directors, that they control the Trustees of The Publishing Society, and in fact

38.
of all pertaining to the Cause so of the practice of Christian Science, does not accord with the Court’s Decision ending this Trial. The position of the Directors went far beyond the Court’s interpretation of the removal clause in the 1898 Deed. They claimed the Manual was also a source to them of legal authority, that where they found its clauses in conflict with provisions in the 1898 Deed, the Manual’s legal authority overruled what they considered conflicting statements in the Trustees’ governing Deed. The Court ruled contrary to any treating of the Manual as a legal document, and defines their Trust and their duties, and must fully carry out the requirements of its terms.

When this Decision in its fulness is put side by side with the full defining letters between the two boards before the Trial, and then their each consistent Trial arguments, only one deduction is possible. The Directors were given their legal point of removal though not on the grounds they largely claimed; the Trustees were upheld in the otherwise broad grounds of their position, and for which they went to the Court for its legal ruling as to their duties under their Deed. A brief reflection on the statements so often made as to this Decision, as in pages 140-142 and your December 7th letter, makes evident the need for readjustments of views and restatements of fact.

The wondrous achieving of our American government in its unique system of “checks and balances,” is the full

39.
flowering of political science. It seems to me, Mrs. Eddy in her divine founding of Christian Science even more uniquely has achieved her “checks and balances,” for the wholly spiritual practice of Christian Science. Her two property owning Trusts legally are perfectly balanced, free from interference, yet by inherent position compelled spiritually to cooperate. Her churches of Christ, Scientist, are absolutely self-governing, with no outside interference from other churches or individuals permitted by the Church Manual, (55, 70, 74),yet entirely free for spiritual cooperation with the two boards. Finally, and most importantly to the Cause and progress of Christian Science, in the fundamental of Mrs. Eddy’s founded one teaching of its divine Principle: “The Christian Scientist is alone with his own being and the reality of things.” (Mess. ’01: 20)

Statements about the Massachusetts’ Supreme Court’s 1921 Decision, both in direct wording and in implications, should conform to the facts of the Decision. Each Christian Scientist is certainly free as to his own interpretation, belief, or conviction as to the place and authority of the Christian Science Board of Directors, and of the Board of Trustees, in Mrs. Eddy’s founding. He is hardly free however to attribute to this Court and its Decision as statements of fact what is not in and true of that Decision.

40.
Individual convictions of Christian Scientists are the right of each, but if differing with this Decision, must not be attributed to it.

NO BOOK CONTROVERSY REFLECTED IN FIELD RESOLUTIONS

The “feelings aroused in the field by the controversy then pending” (3-33), led to meetings and resolutions from field groups. The Proceedings show these were largely instigated from Boston, through the activities initially of a secretary of the Manager of the Committees of Publications, who was also Counsel to the Directors in the Trial. (2-20-114)

Even if these field resolutions did raise the issue or complaint of the Trustees’ publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books, they would still not make that issue a part of the Trial, as pages 140-142 and your letter assert. These resolutions, such as are found in the Proceedings, make no reference to a book publishing controversy. They list grievances at length but nothing as to this. Certainly the proper and finest kind of publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books is of primary concern to Christian Scientists. It is not a subject they would be inattentive to. The fact they do not raise this supposed issue is a positive negative argument against there having been such an issue against the Trustees, thus further confirming what the Proceedings fully demonstrate as to the fact

41.
The main field resolutions came from the three large across the country cities, San Francisco for Northern California churches, Chicago for Illinois’ churches, and New York City which if I recall gradually accumulated money and a following from all over. Apparently none of the New York Committee was in Boston at the time the “Harney” matter and these resolutions, etc., were taken up. People involved in the Chicago and San Francisco resolution Committees were there, and so their resolutions are in the Proceedings.

The resolutions of some “Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Societies in the State of Illinois,” meeting in First Church in Chicago, on April 2nd, 1920 — shortly following the 50% “walk-out” from the founded publishing of both Mrs. Eddy’s periodicals and books — you find in 2-37-38. You will note that both its third and its seventh WHEREAS exactly state the Directors’ basic position of “control.” You will see further, that these “WHEREASES” go fully into the publishing of the periodicals, to cancel subscriptions, etc., but specifically exempt from this “boycott” Mrs. Eddy’s books , direct and pertaining to her. Here they are conscious of all this book publishing, but with no complaint, rather to support this in purchase.

42.
The Northern Ca1ifornia meeting was held February 14th, 1920, just after the Master’s hearing with all Counsel on his about completed Report to the Court, filed March 6th, 1920. It was held in fact across the Bay from San Francisco, the home of its main sponsor, in Oakland. You find it 20-80-81. There is nothing on the book publishing.

“did not conform . . . to Mrs. Eddy’s original intentions.”

In his opening paragraph on page 140, Mr. Orcutt concludes with the statement that the Trustees had publishing plans for Mrs. Eddy’s books, which not only did not conform “to the desire or expectation of the Trustees under the Will,” but “to Mrs. Eddy’ s original intentions.”

When I first wrote Mr. Orcutt I especially asked him what he meant by that, and explained by why such a thing seemed inconceivable. In his reply he made no reference to it. Christian Scientists as is natural have had some differing points of view, the controversy of the Trial illustrating this. But in the publishing of our Leader’s works, all Christian Scientists are certainly unanimous in the one point, of an only the best and finest in this book publishing, in their printing, in their binding, and in their sale. Any controversy as to this is utterly inconceivable.

43.
From the final hearings in January, 1922, I have previously quoted the testimony as to the point of view and standard in their book publishing of the then business Manager and then Chairman of the Board. In 1905 this then Chairman wrote Mrs. Eddy a letter that stated his thought about the sale and demonstration of SCIENCE AND HEAL.H and all of Mrs. Eddy’s works. Mrs. Eddy answered with a letter of important prophecy. Her answering letter, altered a bit from its original, is in My. 197. The Volume VIII of the Christian Science Sentinel in December 1905, pages 265-266 you will find these two letters, and quite revealing as to this then Chairman’s quality of thought about Mrs. Eddy’s books.

The format, style, and quality of Mrs. Eddy’s books had of course long been established, and any change of any importance, again, would seem absurd. Because Mr. Orcutt was Mrs. Eddy’s “right-hand” printer for the twenty years from 1890 to 1910, I feel such language is especially unfortunate, and warrants most careful checking.

MR. ORCUTT’S POSITION IN LETTER

In his reply to my original letter, and a further one he asked me with some suggestions of what I felt he might say. Mr. Orcutt replied that he felt he

44.
would stand on the pages as they are, because: “I have not entered into the merits of the case at all (the Massachusetts’ Supreme Court settled that) but have simply recorded historically the effect on the production of Mrs. Eddy’s books . . . you have expressed a high estimate of the story as a whole.”

That I have expressed, indeed, in fact to both of you. Yet we all know the rule laid down by St. James, and which Mrs. Eddy uses in her wonderful statement in her chapter, “Foundation Work,” Ret. 31: 13-21. If Mr. Orcutt in these pages did what in his letter he says he has done, namely, “recorded historically the effect on the production of Mrs. Eddy’s books by the controversy, that would surely be proper and in order. He would of course have to be certain of his facts, and especially also not to exaggerate or distort them; for the important substance involved is whether the public demand for Mrs. Eddy’s works was at all times adequately met. The implication to the reader, again, is almost certain to be, that the all important and absolutely vital task at all times of making Mrs. Eddy’s books fully available to the public had been interfered with.

These pages 140-42, however, do not “record historically the effect on the production of Mrs. Eddy’s books.” It is not a historical fact that the controversy between the two boards over the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s

45.
books led to the Trial. It is not a historical fact that controversy over this book publishing entered into or was a part of this Trial. It is not a historical fact that the Directors tried to get the Trustees to cancel this contract, either before or during the Trial. Finally, the language used in characterizing the Court’s Decision ending the Trial, as a historical fact requires some revision.

These “historical facts” of whatever effect the controversy may have had on the publishing of Mrs. Eddy’s books, if there are such of any importance in the steady flow of the books, surely can be simply stated , There certainly was a controversy, a great and deep one, of nearly three years’ duration. Feelings were aroused in the field, leading to large cancellations of periodical subscriptions, churches’ and practitioners’ cards, Monitor advertising, perhaps some field interference with the sale of Mrs. Eddy’s books. In March 1920 there was an organized “walk-out” of half the Publishing House’s employees. Mr. Orcutt refers to this wholesale “plot” to stop the publishing work as, “in March 1920, Mr. Hunt and several of his associates left.” (141)

If in this desertion of employees, there was any disorder worth recording, the source of it is thus correctly stated: “It may well be said that the injury (referring to the periodicals) was a result of feelings aroused in

46.
the field by the controversy then pending.” (3–33). In the weighing of’ any such facts, the statements previously quoted from the then Manager of the Dudley and Hodge Bindery should be carefully noted. The Massachusetts’ Supreme Court Decision can be simply and correctly stated: The Court decided in favor of the Directors as having legal power of removal of a Trustee, although the Trustees are fully bound to “perform their duties in accordance with that Deed,” thus ending the Trial and the Court appointing the new Trustees. There can be no objection if facts only — historical facts — are adhered to, with no distortion by implication or otherwise.

As previously explained, my purpose in this has been not controversial but cooperative in the spirit of our teaching: “There is a sharp difference between harmful and constructive criticism . . . let us keep our eyes on the issues and work for the things we believe in. (The President last month, State of’ the Union Address.)

During the course of the Trial, along with the printing the Court Proceedings in full in the Monitor and in a usable size for the Court and all Counsel, from time to time the Publishing Society issued a few pamphlet reprints of some of it. The full Proceedings of course is the only source to check the facts this “memo-analysis”

47.
letter points to. You may however find these three pamphlets I am enclosing handy for reference. One is a neat little reprint of your 1898 Deed; another is the Master’s Report, the bulk of which is officially embraced in the final Decision; and the third gives the Decision of the Full Bench, also the final remarks of Justice Crosby January 20th, 1922, from which I have quoted, and the important September 30th, 1918, letter from the Trustees to the Directors.

My opinion as such, of the facts involved in the statements of these pages 140-142 is of course of no moment. The truth and the facts are however of greatest importance to the Trustees in what they send forth in their books, not only in discharge of their sacred Trust Deed but in the Church Manual’s spiritual guidance such as Article VIII, Section 1 which Mrs. Eddy requires to be read every month in the churches, or as in 44: 2-4.

In the record of the official Proceedings there is no warrant for condemnation by way of misstatement of facts of the then Trustees of the Publishing Society, and I know you agree, how important it is, for the now Trustees to be correct and right in what they send forth.

Very sincerely yours,
Joseph E. Johnston
